Gun slings have been a part of Modesto, California for over 100 years. The first gun sling was made by the father of one of the town’s most prominent citizens, John Slinger, in 1868. A few years later, a man named James Waddell put together a team to make and sell gun slings. These straps were used to carry guns around town on horseback or on bicycles. In 1898, another man named Charles Hildebrandt started manufacturing gun slings in Modesto. His company became well-known for their high quality products and they continued to produce them until the early 1920s. During these years, many different companies produced gun slings and variations thereof. Some of these companies included: Hendrickson Slings (1898-1920), American Slings (1912-1920), Norwegian Slings (1914-1920), Swiss Slings (1916-1920), Dutch Slings (1899-1921), English Gun Sling Company (1896-1925) and German Gun Sling Company (1900-1945). Gun sling manufacturers had several goals when designing their products: To provide an easy and efficient way to carry a weapon around town; To protect users from getting hurt if they fell while using the weapon; To make it easier for users to get hold of the weapon should they lose control; And To provide an efficient means of attaching/unattaching weapons from their carriers

The first modern-day firearms slings were invented by the German arms manufacturer, Mauser in 1871. The devices consisted of a loop of webbing or cordage around a person's waist and was used to hold ammunition in place while firing a rifle.
Modesto, California is a city in Stanislaus County in the East Bay of San Francisco Bay. The population was 58,811 at the 2010 census. It is located on the former Rancho Seco lands which were granted to the town by the government of California in 1879. Modesto is geographically and culturally part of Northern California. The first Europeans to visit what is now Modesto were French missionaries who founded Mission Santa Rosa de la Frontera on October 20, 1795. A small community developed around the mission and a few years later, Juniper Creek was named for one of the Franciscan friars who lived there. The creek's name may have been inspired by Father Jacques Marquette's exploration and mapping of Lake Superior in 1799-1800 that found an area rich in gold reserves. In 1849, James Fenton built a sawmill along Juniper Creek adjacent to where it flows into Sammamish River near present day Fremont. The mill became Fentonville after his death in 1880; it continued until it was replaced by a power plant at Mendota Square in 1951. In 1853, cattle ranchers arrived from Nevada with 7,000 head of beef entering California through Sonoma County for shipment to eastern markets; they discovered valuable nitrate deposits near Redding and began developing these sites into big ranches important for livestock production throughout much of California during this time period (see Gold Rush era). They also laid down tracks leading from Sacramento through Tomales Headland and up past Point Reyes before turning southwesterly towards today’s Red Bluff through Hearst Valley They began selling milk from their cow pens on New Year’s Day 1859 when steamboats brought buyers access to local markets such as Stockton and Bakersfield A post office was established at Gstedt’s Mill on December 8th 1860 under First Captain John Haggerty with Alfred Coyle as Postmaster General A schoolhouse/lodging house burned down November 11th 1861 while students were practicing candlelighting inside; Henry White donated land east of town on which became Sacramento High School (now Davis Hall) three years later On April 10th 1865 Union Major General Ulysses S Grant landed troops at Fort Donner outside Modesto during his campaign against Confederate forces following Appomattox Court House This event marking one significant change within Californian demographics as many men enlisted to fight for Yankee rather than Rebel cause
