In 1925, American Armory merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester) to become one of the world's leading firearms companies. At this time, American Armory produced over 100 million rounds of ammunition for customers in more than 190 countries.American Armory remained a major player on the Ammunition market through the years until its acquisition by Remington Arms Company in 1979. The city was incorporated on April 12, 1870 by act of the California General Assembly under then Mayor James Worthy Hemphill with a population of 10,000 people who were served by 4 City Council members and 1 Police Chief. The Great Fireof 1906 destroyed approximately 60% or all Hanford Nuclear Weapons Plant buildings including aircraft storage areas which gave rise to lore that "Hanford la la" referred to "the place where hell is found". This moniker has been variously attached to other nearby locations including Porter Ranch (northwest), Diablo Canyon (southwest), Clearlake Oaks (southwest) and Oak Ridge AFB (northeast). The plant closed completely on November 6th 2006 having produced plutonium for over 50 years up until then; it remains among America's largest nuclear weapons facilities active today despite plans for closure announced in 2008 In recent years Modesto has seen significant growth with annexations from unincorporated areas around it: Pico Riverahairedon annexed by Modesto in 2013; North Hollywood annexed by Modesto in 2016; Downey annexed by Modesto in 2017; Encinitas annexation by Modestos newest municipality – El Segundo – on March 2nd 2019 . Recently Grants Park Annexation has occurred making it home to over 100 affluent families who have relocated from Menlo Park since 2007
