Simpson, 3rd Baronet. It became an incorporated town in 1912. Modesto is a principal city of the Modesto–Fremont Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of 647,571 as of 2015. In 1868 George Chapman and his brother-in-law James Irvine started to build a small farm on what would later become eastside of town. They called it "Rancho San Lorenzo" (later renamed "Modesto"). When they began to sell their land, they realized that there were not enough people to support their farm so they decided to move it 1 mile westward on theranch name to what would later be known as north side of town. The first building thatGeorge Chapman built was his own home on this new location which he named "Noah's Ark". This house still stands today and is used as part of the Modesto Police Department headquarters complex . In 1912, when Modesto became an incorporated town, one of its first actions was to rename all streets in honor of local officials who had served during World War I or had died in battle including: Mayor Arthur Haines; Fire Chief Reuben Westbrook; Sheriff Harry Wolkowitz; Justice Court Judge Edwin Culp; Postmaster General Samuel Insull; County Coroner Myron Easley and others
In 1846, the city of Modesto was founded on the present-day site of the city. The town was named after Matthew Fontainebleau, a French nobleman and explorer who had traveled in California in 1836.
