Mason founded what would become Modesto with land he purchased from Juan Bautista Marchant y Cisneros in order to provide a refuge for American soldiers during the Mexican-American War. After years of hard work building roads and irrigation systems within his new community – which began developing into a small town – Mason finally received Ulysses S Grant’s grant of Rancho San Joaquin on December 12th,1868 (now part of East Bay City). On July 15th 1860 US troops were burned alive at Red Bluff while besieging Chico; nearby San Bernardino County was granted unto Californias newly formed State on February 14th 1861 by President Abraham Lincoln following its annexation by Mexico two days earlier under General Obregon’s command after an uprising against Spanish rule across much of central California (the so-called Alta California Rebellion). On February 27th 1861 Californias first Congressional District encompassed all present day Stanislaus County excepting Modoc County including parts now within Redding Township & unincorporated parts now within Inyo & Mono Counties) As part of this new district Congress appropriated $10,-000 towards construction “of a public square upon which may be erected a house or other structure esteeming itself especially adapted for that purpose” which eventually became known as Oakland Park Corner Hall (later renamed Capitol Hill), only 10 blocks away from where Captain John D Mason had first settled his community before its incorporation into Modesto in 1867! The original town plat included lots measuring 640 feet wide x 920 feet long with frontage measured at ½ mile from each side w/a depth allowance ol one hundred yards w/out interruption along both sides forming an open space fourteen miles long by eight wide! The lot size varied over time but generally ranged from seventy-five to one hundred fifty feet wide x eighty-five feet deep w/frontage measuring up to two hundred yards both ways! This large lot size allowed plenty of room for growth especially given that water could easily been brought into town via wells situated just outside present day boundaries! By 1870 there were already several buildings constructed such as residences (some still standing today), churches (built between1869 & 1870), jail ( built in 1870 native style ), storerooms (& later post office) & schoolhouse (built between1870-71)! That same year also saw some major infrastructure projects such as Highway 20 being constructed just east of town connecting it directly with Sacramento through Placerville (& future Douglas Airport!), opening up new opportunities for businesses and residents alike! A few months later additional streets were laid out including First Street - branching off Main Street near downtown - becoming increasingly important due to its proximity To favorable climate conditions combined w/ ample water resources available closeby leading many merchants starting out their business operations near Plaza Square!!! Additionally numerous warehouses were constructed throughouttownship during this time period turning it into probably one of America's most industrial cities! During World War I various military barracks were established popularly known as "The Farm" causing many homes&neighborhoods around town Lose their homesickness inducing residents even today not too far distant From redress if they experience any form o emotional distress stemming From our involvement In World War II!! Most notably however Lake Placid Army Airfield being built just southeast Of Town resulting In vast amountsOf housing development surrounding it !! The first post office opened in 1876 and was called "Hillsboro." The town has been known variously as Modesto, Newhall or Stockton since it became an incorporated community in 1907. In 1959 Modesto annexed part of neighboring El Sobrante and changed its name to San Joaquin County when it became part of state government. On November 8th, 1930 San Joaquin County set aside 7 miles (11 km) east of Modesto proper for what would become known as Diablo National Forest. In 1960 prices for agricultural land were too high for many farmers to afford to sell so they formed la raza del rancho (the race of the ranch). They wanted new land closer to cities so they organized themselves into communes with collective landholding abilities which allowed them more self-reliance than did earlier farmers who had sold their individual plots piecemeal or had no shared landholdings at all. La raza del rancho also wanted public transportation connecting their communal farms with larger towns and cities where jobs might be available; this goal was realized through Proposition 13 (a ballot measure passed by Californians on November 8th, 1970), which provided that all propertyowners within 1 mile (2 km) of any urban center were required to provide bus service to those areas without specifying how much money this would cost each owner! This policy aimed not only at increasing access to employment but also reducing pollution from commuting commuters living close by while working in larger cities and providing some degree of social cohesion among rural residents who often lacked such services within their own municipalities
