The blaze killed more than 20 people and destroyed over $1 million worth of property. In 1924, new town hall and water tower were built adjacent to old schoolhouse which had been used as a warehouse since 1853. A park was created along with a playground, tennis court and swimming pool in 1934. In 1968, Mission Viejo became an incorporated city with its own mayor and City Council while still remaining under the jurisdiction of the Monterey County government. On November 5th of that year Proposition 13 passed through California's General Election making it illegal for any type of businesses (small or large) to be open on Sundays without special permission from their owners or managers who would then have to open on Mondays instead pursuant to state law at that time. This decision effectively closed many small businesses throughout California which suffered significant economic losses during what has come be called "The Sunday Great Recession". Prior to this event there had never been such widespread closures across any major American city during peacetime let alone one located inside Mexico! In 1984 two landmark events took place within Mission Viejo; firstly Mayor Emilio Aguirreilts declared October 21st as "El Dia de las Mujeres" (the day women got their own day) after decades of effort by community organizations spearheaded by his wife Rita Aguirreilt-Diaz; secondly a group composed entirelyof women donated 100% of all materials needed for building an institute commemorating La Gloria y la Paz – Equality & Peace - a project initiated by Mayor Aguirreilt with funds raised from various sources such as bake sales and car wash donations among others
Mission Viejo took shape in 1776 when the Franciscan friars founded a new mission, San Francisco de Asís, on the present-day border of Orange County and Riverside County. In 1821, after California reached statehood, Mission Viejo became part of what is now Riverside County.
