Mission Viejo, California (population: 78,000) is a city in Orange County, California. It is the southernmost city on the mainland of the United States and one of the most populous cities in both Los Angeles County and Riverside County. The 2010 census[1] placed Mission Viejo's population at 80,822.[2] The first European settlement in what is now Orange County was made by Spanish explorers in 1769. In 1821, Mission San José de la Loma was founded as a mission near what is now downtown Irvine. In 1864, Rancho Santa Ana was granted to Jose Maria Bueno for his cattle ranching activities; this area later became part of Mission Viejo. One of the major attractions of Mission Viejo during its early years was horseback riding and racing on San Diego Creek. In 1901, an electric street railway system called Pacific Electric Railway (PENINSULA) began service; it served as the foundation for today’s Caltrain commuter rail system. The City Council established a park district to manage Point Reyes National Seashore in 1924 and Point Reyes lighthouse was dedicated that same year. In 1962, Disneyland opened as an amusement park adjacent to then-Rancho Santa Anita racetrack; it would become one of Southern California’s largest tourist destinations with more than 2 million visitors annually by 1988. On July 14, 1992,[3] Hurricane delivered strong winds and heavy rains that caused damage throughout Orange County including Mission Viejo; however no injuries were reported due to the storm surge which reached heights up to 7 feet (2 meters). The damage totaled over $100 million dollars ($120 million USD).[4][5] A commemorative plaque marks where Hurricane struck land near Point Reyes National Seashore with “Welcome To Disneyland!” painted on a rock near mile marker 5 on Interstate 5 near Anaheim Hills Boulevard In 2000,[6] Disneyland underwent extensive renovation known as Big Red One which included adding new rides such as Soarin' Over California and Space Mountain; along with refurbished areas such as Star Tours/Fantasmic! Black Forest Adventurers Clubride closed down effective October 1st after 38 years open while replacement rides opened June 15th featuring Expedition Everest - which includes stops at Everest Basecamp inside Everest Hotel & Conference Center restaurant

In 1916, Mission Viejo became part of the newly created City ofSan Diego which merged with other municipalities to form the current metropolitan area known as Riverside-San Diego County on January 1, 1997.
