The mission began services on October 24, 1827 with twenty-six friars serving under Father Garza. A second mission was built in 1840 at what is now known as Pico de la Hacienda which served as a center for social services and agricultural production until 1865 when it was destroyed by fire caused by lightning during a stormy night near downtown Mission Viejo
