In the early 1900s, Mission Viejo was a small agricultural town in southeastern California. The area now known as Mission Viejo was a part of the Mexican Rancho San Antonio grant given to Juan Bautista de Anza by Mexican president Mexico in 1821. In 1848, following the Mexican-American War, the United States acquired portions of southern California and granted Rancho San Antonio to an American named John Sutter. In 1851, Sutter founded the city of San Francisco on what is now downtown San Francisco and started developing land around it including parts of present-day Mission Viejo. Mission Viejo began as a small agricultural town with only about 50 residents in 1901. It expanded rapidly through annexation by Los Angeles County in 1911 and by Orange County in 1912. The population reached 1,500 by 1920 and 5,000 by 1930. By that time, Mission Viejo had become one of Southern California's most important agricultural communities with over 120 businesses operating at various scales across a wide range of industries including meatpacking, lumbering, dairy production, rice growing and other farming activities. The city also developed into an important center for culture with many notable cultural institutions such as the University of Southern California (USC) and Hollywood Film Studios located there. The City Council declared bankruptcy in 1951 due to increasing costs associated with day-to-day operations while also experiencing declining revenue from its prosperous agriculture industry which had declined since World War II. However, within two years Mayor Goodwin "Gordy" Healy revived the city government and announced plans to reorient it towards comprehensive planning goals that would include developing large parkland along Withal Street between North Torrance Boulevard and Lankershim Boulevard which would be used for public recreation purposes as well as housing developments for workers who supplied essential services such as garbage collection or street maintenance. This plan became reality when Healy obtained state funding to create what is today known as Universal City Plaza which includes several shopping centers and office buildings covering approximately 270 acres (12 hectares). As part of this effort to modernize both local government structure and urban development patterns throughout Southern California during the postwar period - especially after World War II - Healy also promoted large-scale renovation/update projects throughout much of cities statewide including Mission Viejo which would eventually result in its comeback decades later under mayor Don Murray

The first Europeans to explore what is now Orange County were Spanish missionaries working out of missions near present day Mission Valley on November 26, 1769. A Mexican land grant of , also known as Rancho San Fernando Rey del Cajon (Rancho San Fernando), was given to General José Narváez on October 9, 1821. It included much of what is now Orange County and parts of Riverside County today. On December 16, 1846 Mexico granted an additional ranchonetto - Rancho Santiago de la Laguna - to Francisco López from Antonio Mejía Moreno for services rendered during Mexican War (1846–48). This would makeMission Viejo part of Alta California under Mexican rule following independence from Spain on February 14, 1847. On January 8, 1860 Governor Pio Pico designated land east of downtown as University Heights which became home to Caltech and other scientific institutions soon followed. By 1870 there were over 100 businesses in downtown with a population of 2,500 people who lived in six blocks between 6th and 10th streets NW and First and Second streets SW; only two blocks south stood Jardín Botánico filled with botanic gardens operated by the state government until 1931 when they were sold to private individuals for $1 million USD In 1870 there were no schools or hospitals within town limits so residents had to leave their homes going into mission valleys or northward towards Escondido or Del Mar but by 1901 there were four public high school campuses serving students within walking distance: one each for Caltech (+Cal State Fullerton), UC Irvine+US Air Force Academy/NASA/LA City College (now LA City College UCLA), USC Troveiro Business School +Newark Campus & Tower Campus; plus Agnew Hospital which opened in 1902 A new courthouse was built northwest along 7th Street NW between Union Avenue and Masonic Boulevard in 1895-96 using funds provided by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie while construction was underway on nearby North Park Circle including later apartment buildings forming campus core around 1910-11 The original redwood trees that lined Seventh Street NW are still standing although many have been replaced with more recent wood products In 1911 a post office opened at 222 W Washington Ave which served the town until 1959 when it moved to 401 S Main St where it remains today . The telephone system started operation on October 1 1907 using equipment donated by millionaire William Randolph Hearst . Mission Viejo was founded in 1776 by the Franciscan friars as a missionary outpost in what is now southern California. In 1821, the mission was merged with another Franciscan church, San José de la Amada, to form the current Mission Viejo Cathedral. In 1835, Mission Viejo officially became part of California after Mexican independence from Spain was granted. Over the next few decades, many new buildings were erected on the mission plaza and within its walls, including a convent and a jail. Despite this growth, however, Mission Viejo remained largely static until the arrival of American settlers in 1850. By then, many of its residents had returned to their native countries or been baptized into other denominations. However, American efforts to make Mission Viejo an important U.S.-Mexico border crossroads continued for some time afterwards; during World War II it served as artillery post for Operation Crossroads along the Arizona-New Mexico border. Today’s missions are still administered by members of the Friars Minor order but continue to serve as popular tourist destinations that offer cultural attractions such as art galleries and architecture tours specifically designed for visitors (e.g., City Lights Museum).
