On July 16th 1861 Governor Pio Pico called for martial law after disturbances occurred near Los Angeles that had been sparked by rumors that American forces might attack the town during their annual visiting period; consequently many residents fled to Mission Viejo where they were protected by military personnel until things calmed down. The American Civil War began on April 12th 1861 when Confederate forces attacked Fort Tejon which served as Californios’ main supply depot south of Pasadena; nevertheless no casualties were reported within the confines of Mission Viejo until skirmishes ensued several days later when Confederate soldiers stopped at an old adobe home on S Las Tunas Street which overlooked the missions; thereafter sporadic gunfire continued throughout late afternoon between militiamen from both sides without any serious consequences ensuing until early evening when Union troops arrived at the scene making an end to hostilities for that day or so... When World War II erupted federal troops were withdrawn from Southern California but elements remained behind to protect vital installations such as Simi Valley Airfield which became known as “the OK Corral” due to attempts by Hollywood movie stars (such as Bing Crosby) to take flight training exercises over Imperial Valley farmland north-west of Ventura County while being monitored by USAF pilots stationed nearby at Edwards Air Force Base.. When Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on Dec 7 1941 US Marines landing ashore at Guadalcanal manned twoighth degree burns units providing medical treatment for injured Japanese sailors who had made landfall in Southern California prior thereto... This timely response allowed United States Marines ashore at Leyte Gulf with less than 24 hours notice full mobilization under General MacArthur would not begin until January 10 1942... As World War II progressed United States Marine detachments grew larger with Marine Barracks being established at Point Arena (1942), Northridge (1943), Camp Pendleton (1945) and Balboa Naval Station(1946). Mission Viejo, California is a small city located in Orange County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 97,883. The name Mission Viejo comes from Spanish for "place where the viejas (old women) Built their huts." The first European settlers arrived in 1769 and named it San José de los Padres y San Francisco de Borja. In 1821 Mexico gained independence from Spain and renamed it Villa Rica; however, this name did not stick and so Mission Viejo became known as Mission Viejo. The mission was founded by Franciscan missionaries in 1797. It was closed in 1834 after a fire destroyed most of the buildings. After the area was annexed by Los Angeles County in 1886, most of the mission's land now forms part of El Monte Cemetery.
