Mission Viejo, California is a city located in San Diego County, California. The population of the city was 108,339 as of the 2010 census. Mission Viejo has been inhabited by various cultures and groups for over 10 million years. The region that now includes Mission Viejo was first settled by the Ohlone people in the early 1600s. In 1882, part of Rancho San Luis Rey de Cuyamaca was given to John Sutter and his brother David Swartzentruber in memory of their father, Francisco Sanchez de Borja y Costilla. In 1883, this rancho became part of the Rancho Santa Fe Mexican land grant to José Joaquin Mora and Vicente Romero. The realignment of Mexican land grants in 1885 changed Mission Viejo’s boundaries from east-west to north-south. On July 14, 1887 – just two weeks after Mexico attained independence from Spain – President James Kenedy issued a proclamation recognizing Californias new nationhood. This event is commonly known as “the Day Of The Insurrection” because it marked the beginning of a series of uprisings against Spanish rule that would culminate in Mexican annexation of California in 1912. The town began to grow rapidly due to its proximity to naval yards at Point Loma and Naval Air Station Miramar which were then being built on an area that would eventually become downtown Mission Viejo. By 1910, there were 1,500 residents living within blocks of what is now First Street between Old Town Road and Broadway Avenue A (now called State Road 152). Work at Point Loma resumed following World War I while NAS Miramar was closed down due to construction costs overruns; however flying test operations continued until 1926 when it reopened as NAS Fort Worth USA with Seymour Johnson as head pilot. By 1923 military aviation had effectively replaced steamboat travel as the primary mode for reaching inland counties along coastal regions such as San Diego and Orange County during wintertime thereby stimulating economic development within Mission Viejo itself despite few roads or transportation available outside town limits
Mission Viejo was founded in 1777 by José Antonio De la Peña and his wife, María de los Angeles Pico. The mission was the first Catholic mission in what is now Orange County, California. The original building still stands and is a National Historic Landmark.
