Because there were no permanent buildings available at Santa Anita Hills – only tents – starting June 5th, 25 men worked daily from dawn until dusk erecting twenty-four adobe walls around an area measuring just 6 feet wide by 4 feet deep at their most northerly extremity; within these walls they built their own chapel and house which served as their religious center and barracks for male Jesuits living among them during winter months when transportation across the river was not possible or dangerous." "In fact this “new” settlement may have been more hastily put together than any other in California because its very success depended upon its distance from any potential sources both local and foreign energy resources which could easily have undermined it had such considerations been given serious consideration."
