Mission Viejo, California is a city in Orange County, California. It was founded on November 3, 1821 by Gonzalo Padilla and José Antoniomora as the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. The name comes from the Spanish word “huelga” meaning “to assemble” or “to meet.” The population of Mission Viejo peaked at 27,000 in 1850 but declined to 15,000 by 1880. By 1920, it had shrunk to 10,000 and its mission focus narrowed again to law enforcement and religious services.
