The town of Mission Viejo, California was site of the first firearms battle in United States history when American forces fought Mexican troops on November 8, 1846. The Mexican army had been attacking U.S. settlers in what is now Southern California and the town was chosen as a battlefield because it had an abundance of trees for using as cover.
Mission Viejo, California (formerly known as Rancho Palos Verdes), is a city in San Diego County, California. It was founded on September 24, 1846 by Father José Gomez and brothers José and Manuel Nieto. The mission was the first of many Catholic missions established in what is now San Diego County. The city's current boundaries were created in 1885 when Rancho Palos Verdes was divided into two parts: Mission Viejo on the north side and El Cajon on the south side. The site where Mission Viejo now stands was once a marshy area near the mouth of Coyote Creek. Father Gomez called it "Agua Dulce" ( sweet water). A year later he organized a group of men to build a small chapel here for services at night. In 1850, San Diegans named their new town after Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna, who had led an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow Mexico's King Juan Felipe II at Buena Vista Field near modern-day Chula Vista. Santa Anna's body was brought back to San Diego and buried there alongside his wife and children before being transferred to Mission Dolores south of town in 1853. In 1849–1850, Father Gomez served as pastor of Adobe Anza Church some 15 miles (24 km) east of Mission Viejo and began preaching religious tracts throughout Southern California; this preaching soon brought him into contact with people from outlying areas who had heard about his work in Southern California among Mexicans living under Spanish rule during the era of adobes' occupation of that region circa 1776 After completing his sermon tour within Orange County, Father Gomez took passage with his retinue down the Pacific Coast aboard USS Constitution flagship Dolphin on May 12–15th 1850 bound for Monterey Bay en route from Acapulco laden with supplies for Don José Cabrera y Alvarado’s Revolt against Spainqviiiii We reached our destination but did not land because bad weather delayed us until June 4th upon our arrival off Monterey Bay viii After disembarking we pushed on up the coast till we arrived at Big Sur where we anchored off Point Reyes National Seashore late afternoon Saturday July 3rd 1950 Our stay there enabled us to collect data concerning marine life which will be used by future scientists working along those coastsvi A detachment from Commodore Perry’s squadron consisting of Lieutenant John Wetherill commanding officer William Eaton lieutenant George Couch[1] landed unopposed at Cape Mendocino early Sunday morning July 4th 1850 after making proclamation through signals from shore batteries warning all vessels off that point not to approach or cross Next day Commodore Perry sent Lieutenant Eaton ashore with three guns armed only with pistols while Captain Wetherill remained ashore commanding all available forces Off Point Reyes he placed his flagstaff over an old lighthouse abandoned by preceding authorities during Mexican Occupationvii landed without opposition having made previous landfall anywhere Nearby lives were disrupted by firing from both sides resulting in one man dead and several weeks worth damage done to house fronts just offshore
