Mission Viejo, California is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 1,883 at the 2010 census. Mission Viejo sits on an eastern edge of San Diego County and is bordered by the cities of Carlsbad to the east and Northridge to the north. It is also bordered by Imperial County to its south-west. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Mission Viejo were Catholic missionaries from Spain who arrived in 1769. On July 16, 1821, Rancho San Antonio de los Padres (later part of Rancho Santa Margarita) was granted to José Sanchez and Juan Bautista López for the purpose of establishing missions in this area. The mission system grew rapidly with additional grants being given over time including Rancho Rinconada, Rancho Nuevo Encino, and Rancho Gaviota which became part of Mission San Diego de Almagro on October 15th 1836. On December 14th 1848 a group of Forty Mexican soldiers led by Captain Manuel Micheltorena invaded Orange COUNTY while attempting to enter into San Diego county through Mission Valley but were stopped at Millard Fillmore’s Adobe Walls nearpresent day Midvale and forced back across Paso Robles Creek before reaching Garnet Valley where they burned some crops before retreating back into Mexico City that night. This event is generally considered as one of the most successful land invasions in California history as it prevented Californios from taking over much of what are now Orange and Riverside counties.. In 1850 twelve days after General Mariano Vallejo's column attacked Doña Ana River crossing his men had looted or plundered all along the riverbanks leaving nothing behind but fresh graves forming piles upriver fifty feet deep when march resumed next morning eight miles upstream from present day Mission Viejo where cannons carronades could be brought up against high banks against which Indians had thrown sticks with pieces Of Stone left at intervals giving rise to names such as "The Cathedral Mountains"

In 1951, the state government merged Mission Viejo into Los Angeles County and it has remained an unincorporated community within that county ever since.
