Mission Viejo is a city located in Orange County, California. The population was 143,914 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Orange County and one of the nine cities in the San Diego metropolitan area. Mission Viejo had a population of 177,381 as of 2018. The name "Mission Viejo" likely comes from an early Spanish mission built on an artificial hill overlooking Newport Beach. Henry Hudson named it after Alvaro de Mendoza y Menendez, Count of Vizcaya - leader of Spain's colonial efforts in California - who visited Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1769. In 1821, General José Joaquin Cámpora ordered American settlers to leave San Diego for missions near downtown because he did not want Native Americans living near Anglo-Americans. In 1849 Governor Pio Pico designated part of neighboring Santa Ana as the site for what would become Mission Viejo when land grants were distributed among American citizens within that county. Because English speakers predominated among these settlers, many refer to Mission Viejo as simply "Vieja". The first post office opened in 1851; it was renamed Villa Park soon after due to objections from local landowners who alleged that annexation by San Diego would make their village unimportant. In 1906 Trustee John Witherspoon donated 10 acres (40 hectares) of his Rancho Seca estate adjacent to present-day Garnet Valley Park to create a park including views over downtown Los Angeles and Pasadena; Witherspoon also donated 5 acres (16 hectares) adjacent to present-day Fairmount Avenue for use as open space between his home and property line on which he resided until his death in 1916). His donation remains one of Angelenos' largest philanthropic contributions and has been used for various purposes such as parkland, education and public health services since its creation. An act passed by Congress on July 16, 1907 designated portions of Los Angeles County adjoining Anaheim Peninsula as Southern Section 1A and Southern Section 2A respectively with specific boundaries drawn around neighborhoods then known primarily by other names such as Irvine Canyon or Garden Grove Heights: these areas became known collectively later as Southland Hills. The original mission was known as San Gabriel Mission and it is located in the eastern part of the city of Mission Viejo. The first European settlers in what is now Mission Viejo were Frenchmen who arrived in 1769. In 1821, the Mexican Republic acquired California from Spain through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ceded all of Alta California including Mission Viejo to Mexico. From then until 1848, Missions San Gabriel (founded in 1796), Santa Clara (founded in 1807) and Santiago de Compostela (established in 1834) served as Catholic religious centers for Spanish-speaking Californians living east of Los Angeles. In 1850, when American settlers started arriving in large numbers to rancho sections of Southern California, they began exploring possibilities for land north of Los Angeles County. On July 15, 1850, John Cranch proposed that a new road be built northwest from downtown Los Angeles along present day Hillcrest Boulevard to Culver City where it would cross at Lankershim Road near what is now Hollywood Studios Executive Airport. A group led by Captains Robert EJeans and Edward Payson bought the rights to this route from local ranchers on August 5th for $1 an acre lot. The first stagecoach trip between Larchmont Village east of downtownLos Angelesand Beverly Hills took place on October 8th! By December 4th Colonel George Custer had purchased 1/4 mile south at Lankershim Roadof Captain Robert EJeans’s holdingsfor $10 per acre! After making several trips overlandto sell parcelshe finally opened up his homestead area comprising 133 acres at milepost #6 on November 16th 1851! Thiswas only one small step but it signaledthe beginning of an eraof great Rancho Ventura development within miles OF Downtown Los Angeles! Captain Robert EJeans continued to playa major rolein thisearlyRancho Ventura developmentwithseveralbuildings still standing todayincluding his homewhichisnowtheNational RegisterOf Historic Places building!
