They named their new rancho Santa Clara de la Cañada de San Pedro (“holy sister”). In 1853, Las Pulgas y las Meninas mission was founded on some nearby hills by Father Francisco Gomez inside present-day Mission Bayou. A year later, Obispo Anselmo López granted friars free access to alluvial soils near Coyote Creek so they could build a chapel and other buildings near Hollywood Beach (now Historic Core). At that time it was still just a fishing village with some 100 residents; however, within 10 years it had become an agricultural center with over 20 stores and 350 acres (1 km2) of farmland irrigated with canals brought over from Southern California. In 1861–1862 two missions were founded in this area: Nuestra Señora del Carmen missions at Point Conception (then called Punta Cana) east of downtownMission Viejo proper, then south along Point Conception Avenue until it reached Coyote Creek; and Nuestra Señora de la Concepción mission at Point Loma northwest of downtownMission Viejo proper across from where Pershing Road meets Interstate 5 today—the only such mission east of Los Angeles Harbor

Mission Viejo was founded in 1769 as a mission by Father Junípero Serra. The original Mission San José de Guadalupe was built on the site of present-day Mission Viejo. On October 15, 1776, the Franciscan friars under Father Junípero Serra arrived at Mission Viejo from Mexico with the intent of establishing a permanent Catholic presence in what is now southern California. They were met with resistance from Native Americans who had been living in the area for centuries and believed that their religion should be dominant. Afternegotiations failed, the friars withdrew to Monterey Peninsula where they began construction of their second mission, Mission San Francisco de Asís (1787). In 1821, during Mexican–American War, American forces burned down both missions and replaced them with churches. The Missions were abandoned by the mid-19th century due to problems associated with land acquisition and development. However, they remain significant historical landmarks and are open to visitation today.
