The community of Mission Viejo was founded on February 17, 1821 by José Gomez and Mariano Vallejo as Rancho San Buenaventura. On October 12, 1839, Mexican nationals who had been living in Southern Californias missions (pueblos) applied to become citizens of Mexico under Emperor Porfirio Diaz and were given land between Dana Avenue and Menlo Park Boulevard; they built their first homes there too. This area became part of Rancho La Jolla when that rancho was sold to Anglo Americans following World War II. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Orange County were traders from Spain's La Plata Colony who set up a trading post in 1769 on an island in the river near present-day Mission Viejo. In 1821, Mexican citizens Juana de la Cruz and Antonio López founded Rancho Adobe del Rey within sight of Mission San Diego de Alcala (founded 1680). They named their rancho after José Gabriel María Cámpora y Lomas-Peña's captaincy general for Californias Centroamérica Province during Napoleonic times: Villa Guerrero y Peña. During Spanish rule, missions were primarily used as churches and schools but also served as hospitals and prisons. After Mexico attained independence from Spain in 1821, new laws required that all religious institutions be secularized so that they could not be used by Mexicans loyal to Mexico against their government. This requirement led to a split among Spanish priests over how best to address this issue; one group wanted their institutions preserved while another wanted them dissolved or converted into secular academies like those under Mexican President Vicente Fox's rule which had been abolished by American occupation forces following World War II. Ultimately, only three missions – San Francisco Solano (1795), Monterey (1824) and Guadalupe (1826) – remain extant today: San Francisco Solano because it was annexed into California during 1850s; Monterey because it became an open port on US Naval vessels during 19th century arms Race with Mexico; and Guadalupe because it became an unofficial military base for US Marines during WWII before becoming a civilian community again following 1945 atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
