Mission Viejo, California is a city in Orange County, California. The population was 54,393 at the 2010 census. It lies just east of the downtown area of Anaheim and west of Irvine. The city's commercial center is situated on Euclid Avenue between First and Second Streets. The first Europeans to visit Mission Viejo were Spanish missionaries who came in 1769-1770. Father Junípero Serra and his companions founded San José de la Misión (“San Jose of the Missions”) mission pipe line from San Francisco to Monterey Peninsula in 1795 and named it after St. Jerome (an early Christian convert). A second mission, Santa Ana de Alcala, was established about three miles northeast of present-day Mission Viejo in 1824 by Fray Fernando de Alarcón y Pacheco with support from Governor Manuel Micheltorena following Mexico's independence from Spain that year. In 1827–28 Mexican military officer Juan Bautista Vasquez y Peña built a missionsite on an old Rancho Santa Margarita land grant near what is now Mission Viejo for the Franciscans led by Father Antonio López Mena y Arellano. On 24 October 1850 Mexican President Porfirio Díaz named Los Angeles Californios after Vidal Estrada during his visit to Southern California; Los Angeles County was organized two days later on 7 November 1850 by Lieutenant governor Don Pedro Cahuilla as part of Sylvester Waugh's plan to create a "Greater California." In 1852–53 Mexican Army General Vicente Guerrero explored Mono Lake and its vicinity; he recommended that Missions Creek be drained so that crops could be grown there instead of being watered by Mission Creek which provided only 6 percent of LA City water needs; this idea became a reality when Captain James Fenton Robert Newell began draining Mono Lake in 1863 for irrigation purposes.) As part of efforts to build a transcontinental railroad through Central America, American businessmen bought lands northward along present day Camino Real from Tejanos Indians in 1849; these ranchers soon developed cotton plantations there which supplied American mills with cloth made from Indian cottonseed production going back centuries before European settlement had any impact on local land values or economic development southward beyond Yorba Linda Valley where rice farming predominated until about 1900 even though slave labor was used for many years to help feed both southern and northern cities during their late 19th century growth sprees while much inland agriculture languished due primarily to lack of transportation access or price controls instituted during World War II By 1880 all white settler activity in La Mesa valley except around Colusa had ended as railroads arrived making this area one giant agricultural estate crop/pipeline town while much interior residential subdivisions were constructed without any public subsidy or highway funding primarily because the political will existed within CA state government leaders to do so largely because industry wanted new roads connecting major coastal resorts with its growing suburban areas) Although some small businesses did continue operating long after white settlers went out Businesses like laundry facilities, grocery stores, doctor offices etc continued doing business as usual until well into the 20th century Post Office closed down on 15 December 1907 despite attempts by postmaster General Elihu Beese Jr., then Governor Hiram Johnson (himself later US Senator), Mayor George Norris etc.; somehow all mail got delivered Automobiles didn't start coming into use here until shortly thereafter prior to large scale oil production commencing along I-5 corridor northsouth about 1915 although streetcar service began running hereabouts April 1916 From 1920 onward mixed use housing appeared throughout most if not all neighborhoods although single family homes remained popular mainly because prices for such dwellings kept dropping continually relative to other forms of housing increasingly becoming more expensive outside metropolitan areas during these same decades) Today Mission Viejo remains one Of The Most Demographically Diverse Cities In America With A Total Population Well Over 58000 Residents

Mission Viejo was founded in 1771 by Spanish missionaries, and became a secular possession of the United States in 1821. The town was platted in 1864, and annexed to Los Angeles County in 1896. The original mission buildings are still standing today—the Alta California Dominguez Adobe is the oldest structure still standing in the town. In 1771, Father Junípero Serra led a group of Spanish missionaries from San Diego Bay to establish a missions on what is now Mission Viejo Boulevard. Over time, other missions were built here including La Purísima Concepción (1785), Nuestra Señora de las Americas (1812), Santa Catalina del Norte (1848), and San José Convento (1870). During World War II, Mission Viejo was home to many military installations such as Naval Air Station Miramar and Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.Today few traces remain of these wartime sites; however they did impact the local economy as production at Naval Air Station Miramar stopped after the war while Camp Pendleton’s production continued until 1975. In addition to its military history, Mission Viejo also played an important role during both major American civil wars: the California Revolution against Spain and Mexican-American War against Mexico. On July 20th 1850—almost 100 years ago—the first battle between Ulysses S Grant’s division under General Antonio López de Santa Anna and Colonel Antonio Valencia took place here when forces commanded by Lieutenant Colonel John Cushing attacked Mexican positions onshore near where present day Fourth Street meets Mission Boulevard.

Mission Viejo was founded in 1795 by Father Junipero Serra and the Brothers of the Immaculate Conception. The mission became a thriving community with over 200 residents in 1800. In 1821, Mission Viejo was renamed to Rancho San Antonio after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna granted land to the friars for their new mission. The rancho continued to be administered by the friars until it was sold to Mexican citizens in 1853. In 1860, the mission passed from Mexican ownership to American ownership and was designated as part of Alta California’s First District under Governor Pio Pico. In 1871, following its annexation into the United States, Mission Viejo became one of six Californias established as gov-ernmental districts within Alta California. The first postmaster at Mission Viejo was Don José Mariana Ruiz y Ortega in 1872. In 1875, San Diego County became part of Alta California and Mission Viejo fell within that county’s jurisdiction. From 1895 until 1912, responsibility for Missions San Francisco (1849), Presidio (1857), Monterey (1859), and La Jolla (1862) fell within the jurisdiction of Chula Vista Municipal Court; however, these missions were still managed by Franciscan monks under direction from Mexico City.
