Mission Viejo, California (formerly Spanish Mission), is a city in Orange County, California. The population was 57,826 as of the 2010 census. It is located in the central region of the county and straddles both San Bernardino and Riverside counties. The mission period began on October 24, 1821 with Mexican land grants to six priests: Fray José Gomez de la Torre, Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, Father Francisco Xavier Penalosa y Menéndez de Avilés, Father José María Obregon y Salinas and Father Francisco Bautista de Anza. In 1828 the last of these 6 priests resigned due to ill health and were replaced by two more Spaniards: Fray Fernando Urrutia y Vargas and Father Antonio López de Santa Clara. With only 9 friars left by 1830 it became necessary for a new missionary province to be created which included parts of Kern County including Anaheim Hills and Huntington Beach; this new province was named "Riverside" after Bishop Manuel Arguelles Rivera who had been appointed by Pope Pius VII in 1831. The original 12 missions were converted into churches that year with most going up quickly such as San Fernando Cathedral (1835) or Rancho Niguel (1837). However La Purísima Concepción took longer to build due to numerous objections from the local landowners who saw it as an infringement on their grazing rights; finally being completed in 1840. The first brick church was dedicated at La Purísima Concepción on December 17th 1840 by Bishop Arguelles Rivera himself before leaving for Mexico City where he would serve as rector general of all Catholic churches there until his death in 1865. A number of missions have been demolished over time but some still stand such as Our Lady Of Guadalupe (1934), Sta Mesa del Carmelo (1939), Nuestra Senora del Carmen Church (1971) or Antigua Iglesia del Santísimo Sacramento(1976). Mission Viejo, California is a small town in Orange County, California. It was founded on July 24, 1797 by Franciscan Fathers of the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. The original mission site was at what is now known as Prospect Avenue andescape Road. In 1821, the mission complex was moved to its current location at Sosa Street and Guggenheim Boulevard. The Mexican-American War began on February 26,1846 and ended on April 14th with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On October 15th 1847 Father Junípero Serra delivered his final sermon in Mission Viejo before he died two days later from an illness contracted during his stay there. Father Serra’s remains are buried in Mission Viejo today. The first permanent residents of Mission Viejo were Mexican American soldiers who had fought for Mexico against Great Britain during the Mexican-American War. After the war many of these soldiers returned to their homes and families but some decided to stay in America and start new lives here. One such soldier was José Garza who arrived in America in 1849 with his family from Puebla Mexico under a separate US treaty that allowed Mexicans living north of the Rio Grande to remain legal citizens without losing their property or social status quo within their own country
