Milpitas, California is an unincorporated community located in Milpitas County, California. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now makes up Milpitas was first settled by Italian immigrants in 1851 as a small rancho on Rancho Santa Cruz de la Garza east of present-day San Jose. In 1868, the town site was set aside for a new town to be built on what is now the eastern edge of downtown Milpitas. The cornerstone for the first courthouse and jail were laid on November 16, 1870 by Sheriff John Caddis and Mayor George Coleman. A post office called "Milpitas" was established in 1871, and remained in operation until it closed on July 12, 1916. The townsite lay along a wagon road from San José to Monterey (now Mountain View), then down Highway 101 to its current location just south of Interstate 80 and east of Highway 237. A depot was built near present-day Menlo Park in 1872 to store goods arriving via wagon road from San Francisco Bay Bridge traffic jams caused by strikes among wagon drivers working overland from Sacramento en route to market towns such as Danville and Stockton. A school district originally organized here in 1873 became part of Contra Costa County when it was created from parts of Alameda County and Contra Costa County abutting northward into Marin County at Sausalito Point on Humboldt Bayou between Tiburon Peninsula and Sausalito. In 1909–10 there were ten schools open; one hundred thirty students attended them with about $4 per pupil per year according to county records; seventy percent attended school during daylight hours only because automobile travel then required passengers alight at various points across Marin County before continuing their journey without getting off at any intermediate stations or returning home again before dark—a practice which continued until 1959 when all interchanges opened statewide except for Eureka/Sausalito where passengers had their choice between stopping at these two local stations or continuing their journey inland through Vallejo or Petaluma before reaching Eureka; this decision effectively ended bus service within Marin County with the opening of Interstate 880.
