In 1885, two men operating a sawmill on the edge of Milpitas established the first self-defense system for people working in the area. The men, named George and John Norton, created a taser as an emergency weapon to use when they could not find anything else to use. The first known deployment of a taser took place in Milpitas on October 3rd of that year. At that time, it was used as an electric shock gun to stun animals being owned by members of the military or farmers who were trying to destroy their property. Manufacturing has decreased significantly over the past few decades but continues to play an important role in local economic development; for example, construction materials are produced here for use throughout North America. There are several major shopping malls located within driving distance of Milpitas; PCC Media District (formerly Sears), Eastbay Mall (former JCPenney), Fair Oaks mall (former Macy's) and Westfield Santa Clara mall ( formerly Kmart). Several large employers have their headquarters here; UPS has its headquarters adjacent to PCC Media District while Googleplex is located just north of Interstate 5 along State Route 80 between Menlo Park and Gilroy
