The first post office opened in 1852; at that time it was called Sacramento East; later it changed its name to Fremont East before finally settling on Milpitas East in 1867 because it was adjacent to Rancho cordova (now part of Menlo Park). In 1870, John Brougham founded Brougham & Company which manufactured cloth goods from sun-dried flour brought over by Chinese laborers working on his father’s new irrigated cotton farm near Sunnyvale (now Mountain View). By 1880 some 40 businesses had been established along Telegraph Road within just 5 miles (8 km) of downtown where today’s shopping center stands: First National Bank building – built 1888; Merchants Trust Building – 1889; Ralston Purina factory – 1896; Atherton Woolen Mills Incorporated – 1899; Jardine Rubber Company Ltd.– 1901 ; Don Vicente Peralta sugar refinery – 1903 ; Pacific Gas & Electric company gas station - 1912 In 1905 George Westinghouse erected his large electrical plant on land donated by James Buchanan Webb Jr., one of America's richest men and founder of Hollywood Studios fame whose family also owned newspapers throughout Southern California. This major industrial project transformed downtown into an important commercial district with several large buildings including First National Bank building (later Plaza de los Deportes), Merchants Trust Building (later Sears Tower), Jardine Rubber Company Ltd.'s Don Vicente Peralta sugar refinery and Pacific Gas & Electric company gas station all still standing today.. The original town boundaries included present day Palo Alto proper eastward towards Menlo Park/Palo Alto Heights while north lay lower Santa Clara Valley extending into San Francisco Bay

It became a dry goods center due to its location on the San Joaquin River and its access to good soil. In 1875, the first water main was installed in Milpitas. The town's growth continued with the addition of a railroad station in 1903, followed by an electric light plant in 1910. By 1920, there were over 100 businesses in Milpitas with a population of 1,500 people.
