Milpitas is a small city in Northern California, located about 25 miles north of San Francisco. It was founded by the merger of two adjacent villages: Milpitas and Hollis. The name "Milpitas" was given to the village by Spanish mission settlers who named it after Monterey County, which they believed to be situate on a peak called Pico de Gallinas (meaning "mountain of the hairless donkey"). The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1769, when Captain José Nieto and his party from Alta California landed at what is now Milpitas for the purpose of exploring new land. They found an area that would become today's town had been used as a grazing ground for Mission Indians. In 1847, during Mexican rule over California, General Antonio López de Santa Anna approved the purchase of Rancho Rinconada from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $2 per acre ($10 per km²). This grant extended along present-day U.S. Route 101 from Milpitas to Menlo Park and included part of what is now Silicon Valley. The rancho included 6,000 acres (24 km²) stretching eastward to Daly City and westward to Redwood City. Because it straddled both U.S. Routes 101 and 101A, Milpitas became one of only a few towns in California with legal jurisdiction over both routes; other settlements were limited to US 101 only or served by autoonly routes such as Highway 238 or I-280 parallel to US 101. With its establishment as one of several missions within Californias secular domain under Governor Felipe De Márquez in 1851, Milpitas grew rapidly into an agricultural center with livestock herds and corn fields stretching across 3 square miles (8 km²). In 1857–58 local John Sutter built the first mill on an existing stream near modern day Hearst Castle; this millstream later became known as Mill Creek because it furnished water for many mills built around it over time including those at Redwood City and Menlo Park In 1860–61 American Civil War veteran Jesse James robbed several stagecoaches between Sacramento and San Francisco while being held at nearby Stockton jail; he was captured but released before he could be hanged taunt General Ramón Castro in Fort Point Naval Monument on May 25th 1861 On October 19th 1861 five days after General Castro surrendered Solano County's main post Geronimo Brown ambushed travelers traveling through mud flats near La Honda on their way downriver toward Visalia Nuiwetishna southeast of today's Eureka College Town Center - resulting in three fatalities among twenty-six passengers including six Americans - all four horsemen were killed instantly when their mule caught firebranding brush fires off shore northeast beyond current day Eureka Island . Milpitas was founded in 1887 by John F. Nolan as a small agricultural town on the Coyote River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1912 it had reached a population of over 100 people.
