The economy of Milpitas has been based largely on agriculture since its founding. Milpitas has been home to various colleges and universities including UC Berkeley (the original location), UC Santa Cruz (nearby), Stanford University (Stanford Avenue), Caltech (Caltech Boulevard) and many more since they began presence there: Agricultural Institute of America(1880), Hayward School District No.(1910), Diablo Valley College(1930s), CSU Bakersfield(1970s-present). Today it is home to over 150 companies which are responsible for creating nearly 20% of the GDP of Silicon Valley!
Milpitas is a city in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 34,824 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city within Santa Clara County by population and the second-largest city in Silicon Valley after San Francisco. The first European to reside in what is now Milpitas was Juan Bautista de Anza, who explored and charted the area in 1769. The town of Milpitas was founded on November 3rd 1876 by Captain John Sutter as part of his failed attempt to cross the Bay Bridge from Marin County into Contra Costa County. In early 1877, an irrigation project led to the construction of Dona Ana Dam across Coyote Creek which created a new stream that flowed into San Antonio Creek. This diverted water from Coyote Creek and created a new community called Dona Ana which included Milpitas and portions of Fremont, Belmont, Hayward, Mountain View and Palo Alto. On February 14th 1880 Mexican Pacific Railroad engineer José Feliciano built a small cabin on land east of Coyote Creek for himself and his family consisting of six logs with adobe walls around it which served as their home until 1898 when they moved toposts north of Coyote Creek where they resided until 1917 when they bought 160 acres (68 hectares) adjacent to present day Redwood City Boulevard between Arenoso Road and Paseo de la Cruz streets for $2 per acre ($ / ha). They continued to live there until their death in 1952; their son Hilario also lived there until his death in 1984. In 1912 Elihu Root purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) south of downtown Milpitas from Ayerdema brothers including parts of today’s Sunnyvale mall complex along with some buildings east off I-880 near CPU Plant No 8 & Park Place Drive North then drove out 2 miles east onto Ortega Road which leads down into Martinez Reservoir before turning northeast onto Don Mohawk Avenue continuing past Palo Alto College before terminating at Arenoso Road just outside Redwood City Boulevard intersection. There were no roads named Arenoso Roads then but later various updates/namesings occurred such as Arroyo Seco Rd #1 & #2 (1927), Kiewit Rd (1940), Antelope Valley Rd #1 & #2 (1948), Angeles National Forest road Elembrusco Rd (1958), Diablo Canyon Blvd (1966) etc names reflecting changes in use or ownership over time e.g., Arroyos Secos Rd #3 1957-1975 (#4 1976-present), Kiewit Ave 1959-.Present
