Milpitas is a small town in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. In 1888, Bancroft & Company opened a flour mill in what became known as "The Dunes." In 1897 developer Alfred Dunsmuir purchased The Dunes from Bancroft & Company for $2 million and built himself a house thereon called "Dunsmuir House." That same year saw the start of agricultural production around here with John Ahern starting an orchard near his house on Church Road/Hwy 101 in 1902 and others followed over time including Alameda Pineapple Growers Incorporated in 1922 and Golden State Fruit Packers Co., Ltd., based here since 1945 until it merged into USF&P Foods Incorporated in 1984. By 1937, all but two acres (0.8 ha) of Foster Road had been developed for farming with ranches scattered throughout Rancho Nojo de la Gente; however much development has occurred since then because street names have changed and portions of town have been annexed by other municipalities such as Dixon Heights and Pleasanton

Milpitas, California is a town in San Mateo County, California. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and shares borders with Palo Alto to the east and East Palo Alto to the west. The population was 492 at the 2010 census. Milpitas was founded in 1876 as a small farming village by brothers Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail. In 1916, it merged with neighboring Santa Clara to form Milpitas-Santa Clara County. The first post office in Milpitas opened in 1876, and remained open until 1964. The first store held supplies for farmers living near Palo Alto and had a shop front out of which customers could view products from local farmers markets that were held every Saturday morning throughout the year. In 1916, when Milpitas-Santa Clara County was formed, it annexed part of Palo Alto along with nearby Mineta Park which would later become Mountain View proper. As part of this merger, Millbrae-Pacifica also joined the county as a separate incorporated municipality with its own governance structures including an elected mayor and city councilors who reported directly to county supervisors instead of to their respective municipalities’ leaders. Milpitas has experienced several waves of population growth over time: during World War II (1945–1946), when demand for munitions created an influx of new residents; during the early 21st century dot-com boom (1996-2001); again during the late 21st century through gentrification (2005–present). Most recently, however, population growth has slowed due to stagnant job growth across many sectors in Silicon Valley combined with strong competition from other communities around San Mateo County for housing development dollars. This stagnation has led some residents to call for increased community engagement within their towns while others have pushed back against what they see as encroachment by outside forces on traditional cultural values and community functions

By 1860, there were six businesses in Milpitas with a population of 100. In 1865, the first train arrived in Milpitas from Sacramento. The first store in Milpitas opened in 1868 and quickly became an essential part of the community. A new courthouse was built in 1915 and still serves as the town's main building today.
