Milpitas, California is a town in San Mateo County, California. The population was 41,812 at the 2010 census. Milpitas was founded in 1876 by Scots-Irish settlers as a small agricultural community on the east side of San Francisco Bay. The name means "bridge over the bay" and its initial purpose was to connect Rancho Belvedere and Rancho Santa Clara. The first post office opened in Milpitas on July 6, 1876. The town's first settler was John Waddell. By 1880, there were 10 families living in Milpitas with a total of 164 acres (65 ha). In 1887, James Fenton acquired 640 acres (250 ha)Owned by Elisha Kelleher & Co., earliest known developer of Hayward Valley adjacent to San Mateo County from which he got title deed in 1888 for $1/acre (=€0.68/ha). He named it Forney Valley after himself and another friend JFenickel who had helped him acquire the land. In 1907, Atherton & Company built an electrical substation west of town for use by local farmers during World War I; this substation has been preserved as part of Milpitas history Museum today! In 1916, Samuel Morse donated his land across from downtown to build Morse Elementary School; that property still stands today and is used as part of Town Center shopping mall! In 1927 when incorporation occurred as a city under state laws governing towns with more than 10 residents they voted against incorporation because they felt that it would be difficult to maintain their own services without help from the larger municipality – but due to popular demand county officials then granted them City status! On November 3rd 1935 Mayor Harry Pritchett dedicated Roosevelt Drive which runs through downtown between Main Street and First Avenue North as “President Franklin D’Souza Boulevard” after his visit two weeks earlier! On December 17th 1935 all merchants within 1 mile radius along Roosevelt were required to open their doors for New Year’s Eve 1934 celebrations when 7 types of food were served including jello Shots!!! It has been said that if you are lucky enough to have been born within 1 mile radius then you received free refreshments on New Year’s Eve until midnight!! This event is still celebrated annually today even though most people now live outside of town! In 1938 city workers laid down concrete blocks at what is now Midtown Plaza just south of Market Street–this plaza later became home to the Municipal Services Building where government services such as fire fighting and trash collection were provided until 1977 when those services were moved into new buildings located near Civic Center Mall! After years languishing on Capitol Hill due mostly to lack funding Milpitas finally annexed nearby Half Moon Bay in 1986 giving it full city rights!!!
