Milpitas is a small town in Central California, located on the San Joaquin River. The population was estimated at 12,000 in 2010. It is part of the Sacramento-San Bernardino-Oakland metropolitan area and is home to the University of California, Riverside. The first European to sight Milpitas was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 7, 1542 when he anchored his ship Santa Catalina off its shores. Pedro Fortunato de Alvarado visited the area on January 8, 1543 and named it Stonington for General Gonzalo de Stonington who had been with Alvarado's expedition against Diego López de Salinas. In 1824, what is now downtown Milpitas was platted as part of Rancho Pastoria del Ranchería grant given to José Antonio Arguello by Franciscan priest Father Junípero Serra. In 1865, work began on building the new County seat for Kern County which then included most of what is today Milpitas except for a small piece near present-day Menlo Park. On July 14, 1870 (four days after San Francisco became a city), voters approved Measure M which set aside land east of Highway 99 within Milpitas limits for university students and their families only; this allowed early development in that section of town where newer blocks still stand today including North Point Park (now an industrial park) and parts of South Point Park including Mission Creek Parkway between 24th Street and 42nd Street. The first post office opened in Milpitas on November 1st, 1870 under the name Oficina de Correos y Telégraphos à las Nubes (Office of Telegraphs and Telephone Lines at Clouds). On May 16th 1886 citizens applied for city status from Bakersfield because they lacked transportation to get to their jobs in Bakersfield or other nearby cities during those years due to poor roads and railroads being built at that time by various companies such as Southern Pacific Railroad Company., Edison Electric Light Company., Western Union Telegraph Company., etc.. On December 2nd 1886 City Council granted cityhood to Milpitas with “a view towards securing better facilities” such as water systems, sewers, public parks etc.–the first municipio in California. At that time there were just twelve families living in downtown being served by four businesses providing public services: physician Drs Cook & Hirschman’s Clinic; bakery & grocery store Mrs Algeri & Sons; blacksmith Mr James’ Shop; Post Office; gas station Mr Sutter’s Service Station.; fire truck volunteer service A Squad from Battalion No 10 Volunteer Fire Department.). A large variety of industries developed over time with some remaining until about 2005 when many moved out due to changes brought about by global warming like car production moving out into more open fields adjacent to highways while others like cattle ranching producing milk continued until recently
