Milpitas, California is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 3,824 as of the 2010 census. The townsite was founded in 1856 by men from Stockton and Bakersfield who travelled down the San Joaquin Valley to find land for sheep and cattle. The first post office in Milpitas opened in 1859. The name "Milpitas" was derived from Mission del Correo de Alta California (the "high" mission), which was founded in 1775 by Franciscan missionaries near what is now downtown Milpitas. In 1868, an act of Congress changed its name to Contra Costa County; Milpitas became part of the new county seat at Martinez on March 21, 1870. The first incorporated business in Milpitas was a grocery store operated by John Waddell & Brothers from 1860 to 1865. In 1902, A&P Store No. 1 opened followed by First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) in 1906; both banks remain major employers today with their loss-making stores closed within months of each other during the Great Recession of 2007-2009). Milpitas is a city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 26,849 at the 2010 census. Milpitas is located on the eastern edge of the Central Valley and has an elevation of 5,815 feet (1,711 m). It is home to Hewlett-Packard Company's main campus. The first Europeans to visit what is now Milpitas were three Franciscan friars who went by the name of Don José de Alcalá and Don Lorenzo de Mendoza on their way from San Francisco to Monterey in 1769–70. In 1881, Rancho San Fernando owner Carlos Bocanegra sold his land around present day Milpitas to J.P. Morgan & Co., which developed it into one of Northern California's most important agricultural communities with fruit orchards, vineyards and other agriculture interests until World War II when it became a manufacturing center for electronics products such as radios and television sets. After World War II ended many factories closed down but Milpitas gradually regained its former prosperity as an agricultural town with major crops like grapes, olives and almonds; light industrial production centered around chemicals production until the end of the 20th century; then there was a steady increase in services culminating in today's high-tech industry concentration. On July 14, 1894, during regular Session of the State Legislature at Sacramento City Hall following passage of Senate Bill No. 2190 entitled "An Act To Regulate The Construction Of Cemeteries In Contra Costa County", Supervisor John Sutter proposed that recommendations made by District Attorney William Moulton be acted upon by adopting an ordinance providing for burials within five days after death without any notice being given to survivors or relatives thereof provided that all proper burial charges are paid by those buried therein: "Be it enacted by us this Fifteenth Day of July eighteen hundred ninety four" As supervisor Sutter soon learned during various hearings held throughout Contra Costa County prior to adoption of this ordinance he had more than one interested party clamoring for bodies quickly being cremated rather than allowed time for mourners or relatives to inspect remains: This became known as the "Cemetery law". One result was a decrease in number interments per 100 years from 1 in 1907 down to 0·85 in 2007 while total numbers remains unchanged at over 10 million people since Cemetery law took effect... Today Milpitas' largest employer continues its roots as one of Northern California's leading technology companies with major operations including HP’s main campus... Approximately sixty percent (60%)of all jobs created here have been related directly or indirectly to technology... Today much economic activity takes place outside city limits with grocery stores(20%), service businesses(10%), retail(8%)and professional offices/ hospitals(6%).
