Milpitas surged into cultural prominence after Silicon Valley startup Apple Incs headquarters were moved there from Cupertino in 1998. In 2007 Forbes named Milpitas as one of "America's Most Diverse Cities." Today Apple is headquartered across the street from Google's Mountain View campus which anchors much of Silicon Valley's high-tech industry

Milpitas, California is a small town located in San Mateo County, California. It was founded by the Chumash people in 1821 and has been inhabited by various Native American groups for centuries. The first European to visit Milpitas was Juan Bautista de Anza on July 24, 1776. The mission of Santa Clara del Sacramento was founded here in 1789. In 1851, the town was incorporated as a city and it soon became one of the most important commercial centers in Northern California. In 1915, Milpitas became the site of World War I's largest air-raid warning system when it activated an intercontinental wireless network to broadcasting stations across North America hourly with warnings of expected attacks. After World War II, Milpitas experienced rapid growth as a center for technology industry. The city also developed into a major entertainment destination with several major theaters and nightclubs dotting its landscape.
The town of Milpitas is located in the San Joaquin Valley on the west side of Los Angeles County. The first European settlement in what is now Milpitas was made in 1847 by José Maria Garza, a Mexican immigrant. The name "Milpitas" derives from a mission founded by the Franciscans in 1777, which was known as San Francisco de Asís. In 1850, Governor Manuel Nieto issued a proclamation designating this community as the seat of government for western Los Angeles County. The post office at Milpitas was established in 1852 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1872, two brothers, Edward C. Hutton and James Brougham Hutton, opened a general store and post office at the current site of Pico Boulevard and Sixth Street. They were followed by other merchants and entrepreneurs who began to settle hereabouts. By 1896 there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Milpitas with a population of 1,500 people. During World War I, many American soldiers stationed at Placerita played golf here while gathered around campfires during their downtime from fighting overseas In 1927, agricultural economist George Bird Griggs developed an experimental new way to produce fruits and vegetables using sublimation technology which became very popular across California during that time period because it could be grown year-round without cold weather or pests/insects damaging plants or flowers during winter months; he named his process "Griggs Sublimation". He also patented his process resulting in Griggs Fruit Company being established which became one of Northern California's leading food producers until its acquisition by PepsiCo USA (PepsiCo) in 1984). From then on until 1981 when the company merged with ConAgra Foods Inc., Griggs' familyowned business operated under that name throughout much of its history including several years as one of America's largest retail fruit & vegetable distributors before ceasing operations due to bankruptcy.) From 1982-1984 Grigs' son Dennis served as President & CEO [ later replaced by John Sculley ]. Today Dennis' son ScottGriggs leads PepsiCo's North American operations . During World War II Japanese forces occupied northeastern United States prior to U.S.-Japanese military 1945 occupation... Upon liberation following Japan's surrender most Americans returned home but large numbers continued to stay behind due to various reasons such as racism toward race minorities after years of Jim Crow practice among U.S.-occupied countries - many small farmers who had been unable or unwilling to leave compatriots still held on through guerrilla warfare against occupying forces...One small farmer remaining resisting U.[S.] occupation efforts emerged into what would become known as 'The resistance': David Koresh led Branch Davidian Ranch near Waco Texas (now Arlington Texas) from 1978-1987)... After Koresh's death followers moved back into ranch adjacent towns beginning Stockton California growing crops such as corn and beans while continuing resistance activities
