With the end of war and subsequent baby boomers starting families, Milpitas experienced rapid growth until 2000, when it lost nearly half its population to migration and other causes. Today, Milpitas remains an active agricultural center with many modern businesses including a medical school and two major shopping malls. The earliest evidence for human inhabitation within present-day Milpitas dates back more than 10,000 years towhen several petroglyphs were discovered near where the town stands today. The most notable discoveries include one depicting an anthropomorphic horse that has been dated back to 4500 BC; another depicting three human figures standing around what appears to be a fire; and still others showing various animals such as horses, dogs, pigs, rabbits and llamas grazing or playing among plants or trees.. In 1887 John Davenport erected his first home here on Rancho Santa Clara land which he had purchased from José Castro y Costilla about two years earlier for $2 per acre ($40 per km²). He named his new settlement after himself - MILITAS being Spanish for "milestone". In 1901 City Hall was built on what is now First Avenue South between Fillmore Street and Doniphan Road., next door to Mrs. Hetzel's grocery store which became known as Metropark Park Place Mall later that year.. In 1916the City Council authorized annexation of neighboring unincorporated territory resulting in the establishment of Industry Township.. In 1951 Milpitas merged with nearby Concordia Township becoming one municipality under original Surrounding Municipalities law.. On July 1st 1990 all cities within Contra Costa County were consolidated into one municipality pursuant to then current local government laws administered by then Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors
