Milpitas, California is a small town located in San Mateo County, California. It was founded in 1887 by Arthur Milpitas and his wife Anna. In 1922, the community absorbed the neighboring communities of Crockett and Barnard. The population of Milpitas increased steadily from its founding until it peaked in the late 1960s at over 20,000 residents. At that point, there were only a few thousand people living in Milpitas proper and many more spread out through nearby villages and townships. Today, Milpitas has a population of around 10,000 residents and is still an important commercial center for the surrounding rural area. The first European settlers to arrive in what is now Milpitas were Englishmen who landed on July 15th 1887 on Hattera Point Lighthouse beach. They named their new settlement after explorer Gabriel Rodriguez de Mendoza (1540-1603), who had explored much of NorthernCalifornia during the Mexican era. The first post office was established in 1892 and became known as Colonia Arthur Millitos after Arthur Millitos donated land for it. By 1907, most of the original 1st generation Anglo settlers had died or moved away as ranching became an increasingly important economic activity in the area. Arthur Millitos' grandson John Dutton Dutton succeeded him as president of Colonia Arthur Millitos from 1912 to 1916 inclusive; he also served as vice president under his father's presidency from 1911 to 1913 inclusive. During World War I both John Dutton Dutton and his father signed up with The US Army but due to health reasons they did not serve overseas; however, they later came back home to help manage Colonia Arthur Millitos during World War II when American forces invaded Mexico City on April 16th 1945 through Operation Neptune's Spear – which resulted in over 100 killed including John Dutton Dutton himself along with other key officials at Colonia Arthur Millitus headquarters building on Avenida Madero which was heavily bombed leaving no survivors behind! The post office closed down at some point after that although remnants can be seen today within blocky walls that sheltered Postal Service employees between 1951-1966 while heavy development took place adjacent to Interstate 80A near where Post Office Boulevard currently starts/ends outside of town limits! One significant event that occurred within this time frame related to mail service was when Peninsula Airlines opened its hangar facilities adjacent to Mrs Ethel Mazer's grocery store yards east of downtown Milpitas across from Interstate 80A just south of Highway 9N exit #2B – becoming one of the earliest airlines operating out OF MILPITAS!!! This gave rise to "Plymouth Air" being well known throughout MUCH OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA almost immediately prior TO jet travel becoming available!! Plymouth Air remains THE ONLY INTERSTATE AIRLINES ORIGINALLY OPERATING OUT OF MILPITAS TO THIS DAY !!
