In the early 1800s, Milpitas was a small agricultural town in the San Joaquin Valley. During this time, ammunition production was an important part of the local economy. Militarization of the area began in the early 1900s with the first use of artillery in Milpitas. At that time, there were no military installations within Milpitas and artillery was used to shell agricultural fields and other targets located outside of town. In 1907, a battery of six cannons was placed on Mount Diablo by the California State Militia in order to protect against raiders. The following year, another battery was erected at present day Sonoma Boulevard and Winchester Avenue. In 1911, an even larger battery consisting of sixteen cannons was built on Mount Diablo east of town. In 1912, an ammunition depot and storage facility for guns and ammunition was built on Chapel Street adjacent to the old post office building. This depot became known as “Fort Mason” because it served as both a garrison for militia members stationed in Milpitas County during World War I and also as a storehouse for food supplies awaiting shipment to Europe. During World War II, Fort Mason functioned as a naval Ammunition Depot until it was closed in 1943 due to over-population. After its closure, Fort Mason served as Headquarters for the Santa Clara County Sheriff Department from 1945 until its closure in 1969.
