In addition to manufacturing rounds for handguns and rifles, Winchester also manufactured shotgun shells and rifle bullets. Around this time, Milpitas also became home to another major ammunition manufacturer: Browning American Firearms Corporation. Browning American Firearms Corporation was founded by George Browning who had retired from Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Browning American Firearms Corporationproduced ammunition for both handguns and rifles as well as shotguns and machine guns. During World War II, ammo production increased significantly in San Francisco because of the large demand for munitions created by the war effort. This increase in production led to an increase in prices which made it difficult for people living near urban areas to afford high-quality ammunition products. The first mention of Milpitas is from November 12th, 1853 when it was part of Rancho San Pablo and later portions of Rancho de las Pulgas and Rancho San Luis Obispo. The name derived from "militi" meaning "a levy or assessmentable tax", and "-itas" meaning "place". The city was founded on December 14th, 1867 by James A. Weaver as a post office called Midway Station on the old Central Pacific Railroad line between Stockton and Sacramento. Midway Station served as a junction for the Central Pacific Railroad's mainline east to Stockton, while also serving as a stop for stagecoaches going to/from Yosemite National Park. In 1870, Weaver sold his interest in the town to James Hogg who named it after himself - Hoggs City (later renamed Milpitas). In 1872, water began being delivered through pipes from Millbrae Reservoir into town from an aqueduct over mountain range west of town. This new water system made possible all-year round farming and allowed for more businesses to be built in town including two hotels: the First National Bank Building and the Hotel Californian which still stands today (now known as Cooley’s). A school opened in 1870 entitled “Hogges School” which continues to serve students to this day; it became known as Milpitas High School when it moved into its current building on Richards Street in 1957. In 1899, another school opened entitled “Milpitas Intermediate School” which continued until 1957 when it became known as “Milpitas Jr./Sr., High School” due to its proximity to other high schools within walking distance ofmilpitascity center only south of Richards Street! One year later (1900), during World War I there were advances made with aircraft that allowed strafing missions over enemy positions without causing collateral damage; henceforth these strafing missions were carried out using fighter planes instead of horses or cannons because horses would get tired quickly during such long flights over such high altitudes etc... With this new technology came increased demand for goods produced inside newly developed areas like Milpitas so small businesses started up all over again looking for ways provide services they may not have been able to provide before due mainly to lack of resources available locally! Many companies that once thrived closed down because they could not compete with larger big box stores like Safeway or Costco who had state-of-the art facilities! Over time many small businesses closed but one that never went away was Stove & Pipe Company who provided quality cooking stoves and parts at great prices until their doors closed in 2000! Today you can still find evidence left behind by Stove & Pipe Company such ashtaps along Richards Street
