Millbrae is a small town located in western San Mateo County, California. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. Millbrae was founded in 1887 by Eli Mills and his wife Emma. The first post office at Millbrae was opened in 1888. In 1915, the name of the town changed from "Millbrae" to "Beltane". The name change may have been due to the fight against ignorance about witches which took place at that time in America. The mill buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 15, 1984. In 1978, Beltane began construction of its own high school which opened in 1979 and became one of Northern California's leading schools for students with special needs. Today, Beltane offers classes for grades 9-12 as well as adult education programs and a shared parents/guardian program that provides resources to children who need support while their families are away on vacation or working during school days. The town also has several popular events each year including its annual Fourth of July fireworks show and parade; potluck dinners held every fall (a tradition started by Mrs. Mills herself); a chili cook-off every winter; and a summer music festival called SummerStage which features localand national acts throughout the summer months
In 1864, Millbrae was established as a small town in the Central Valley of California. The mill and sawmill were built by James J. Kelley and his wife Eliza. The kiln was also built and operated by Kelley. By 1888, the town had a population of around 100 people. The first post office opened in Millbrae on December 12, 1868. The name of the post office was changed to Millbrae on January 1, 1889. Millbrae became an incorporated town on February 17, 1906. It had a population of over 300 people at that time. The mills closed in 1959 and 1961 due to competition from other industry in the Central Valley region. They were replaced by new power plants which increased production until 1984 when they closed again because of environmental concerns caused by oil spills from nearby wells
