Millbrae is a small town in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 10,701 at the 2010 census. Millbrae is located on a small mountain overlooking the community and its namesake creek. Millbrae's claim to fame may come from its association with Hollywood celebrities, most notably Academy Award-winner Cary Grant and his wife Irene Dunne. The mill that now stands in Millbrae was built in 1884 by George Hutton as part of his efforts to improve the quality of water available for irrigation in what is now Los Angeles County. Hutton's mill became known as "the best mills in America." In 1887, when American Standard Company began production at the mill, it became one of the first plants in Southern California to use continuous casting processes for making steel products. American Standard continued production until 1957. In 1915, Small businessman Harry Cohn donated land adjacent to his home for a shopping center which would become known as Westfield Mills Mall. One of Millbrae's early residents was banker Thomas Waddell who moved to Millbrae from Culver City after starting his own bank there in 1912. Waddell spearheaded development of what is now called "Waddell Square" which included many local businesses including Butte's Hardware and Music Store (now Target), Bob Evans Restaurants (now KFC), Lighthouse Drugstore (later Safeway) and First National Bank (). In 1951, Hollywood film producer Hal Roach purchased much of property near Westfield Mills Mall for use as a movie set for his Western series "Gunsmoke". The show ran from 1951 through 1957; during its run, approximately 1 million people visited various sets throughout Southern California. Many famous actors filmed their scenes here such as Cary Grant and Irene Dunne who appeared in over 60 episodes between 1951 and 1957 alone! Prior to Gunsmoke's cancellation following Season 9 due to low ratings, several other shows were shot at the site including "The Rifleman" and "Death Valley Days". Today only a few pieces remain from these productions including an old water tower still standing near Waddell Square - used as part of an exhibit about filming Set decoration at Universal Studios Hollywood . In 1973′s Cosby Show episode "Fuzzy Bunny",Millbrae played itself onscreen during one scene after being taken over by Fuzzy Bunny’s home office while he went into surgery nearby at UCLA Medical Center.–this also served as United Artists' debut release outside North America Today Millbrae has seen steady growth with new housing developments completed all around town along with professional shops like Applebees & Hardees addition along with some great restaurants like Blue Bottle Coffee & Elevenses

The mill closed in 2003 but has been preserved for use as a local history museum since then. According to the United States Census Bureau, Millbrae has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,536 people residing in the town center including 536 households out of which 377 had children under age 18 living with them,[1] while 451 were unmarried opposite-sex partnerships and 37 same-sex married couples or partnerships.[2] As reported by "The Chronicle" on December 6th 2009: "Since 2000 - even before Google Earth - many residents have used aerial mapping services to help see where their fellow citizens live."
