Millbrae is a community in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 1,818 at the 2010 census. Millbrae is located on the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) and it borders San Rafael to the east and Sausalito to the north. The first known inhabitants of what is now Millbrae were Native Americans who lived there for generations before European settlement began. The first Europeans to arrive in Marin County were Spanish missionaries in 1776. They built small mission stations along the coast until 1821 when they abandoned them due to distance from sea and competition from Mexican settlers. In 1847, George Hinkle started a railway from Tiburon to Sausalito which passed through Millbrae on its way south. In 1850, he founded what is now Redwood City as a town on land that he had leased from Juan Bautista de Anza y Costilla. By 1860, Millbrae had over 100 residents and was incorporated as a village under the name of "San Rafael". The first post office opened in Millbrae on July 12, 1872; it changed its name to "Redwood City" on December 14 of that year because of local complaints about too many letters being sent with one letter headings like "R". On January 10, 1889, Redwood City merged with San Rafael into one municipality under the name of "Millbrae". During World War II much activity took place within or around Redwood City due to its strategic location at Point Reyes National Seashore just downwind from North America's only submarine base during WWII-the Japanese Naval Base at Hornet's Nest (now Midway Island). This resulted in many factories opening up in nearby cities such as Novato and Tilden after war production ended in 1945 but most went out of business over time including several car companies shut down by 1969 when Interstate 5 bypassed Point Reyes completely making it difficult for them to get customers back onto their roads. Today mill brae retains some vestiges of former industrial might including numerous auto plants closed down by 1969 but also has some new businesses starting up like health spa/massage parlors/spas catering mainly towards younger generations looking for healthy living alternatives outside of downtown Howell or suburban Cupertino equivalents such as Menlo Park or Palo Alto

By 1899, there were five businesses in Millbrae with a total payroll of $1 million; these included two flour mills operated by Atherton & Company (later White Star) and Millsbury Flour Works Inc., which had opened in 1892 adjacent to the millrace's confluence with the Stanislaus River. In 1916, when electric railways began service throughout Northern California, Millbrae became one of the first communities served by Valley Electric Railway #1 (later Pacific Electric). In 1951, when Valley Electric Railway #2 merged into PCLRT (PioneerclosedRailroadTE),millbrae became part of PioneerclosedRailroadTE also known as "the last line." PioneerclosedRailroadTE was sold to CSX Corporation in 1993 and dissolution followed within seven years. Today onlytrace remnants remain of PioneerclosedRailroadTE including a few foundations and overgrown weeds near Interstate 5 southbound exit 8A off US 395 just past milepost 467
