Millbrae, California is a small town in San Mateo County, California. It had a population of 3,752 as of the 2010 census. Millbrae is located about 23 miles (37 km) east of San Francisco and about 17 miles (27 km) northwest of Redwood City. The first permanent settler in Millbrae was Hyrum Wright who arrived in 1851. The name "Millbrae" was derived from the local Muir-Wilson oak trees which were so high that they could not be seen from anywhere else in the area. In 1884, Waddell & Company transported logs down river to its mill at Millbrae for processing into lumber. By 1890, there were six sawmills operating in and around Millbrae – two paper mills, one gristmill, one lime kiln and three livery services. In 1896, John Crouch founded Crouch Lumber Company with his father Charles Crouch. The company rapidly became one of the leading lumber dealers in Northern California due to its large quantities and good quality products. In 1906, Charles Crouch died suddenly and his son John took over control of the company; he served as president until his death in 1957. From 1908 to 1912 David Sarnoffowned an adjacent parcel of land between Rancho Palos Verdes Estates on the north side and Menlo Park on the south side which he used for pasturelands for his horses and cows. He also built some residences nearby including Sarnoff House which still stands today on property that once belonged to Mr.. Sarnoff's daughter Eleanor Hobson Grant . The Commercial Street Bridge across Coyote Creek was built by Samuel Peskin over Coyote Creek on May 1st 1889 while construction was taking place on what would eventually become University Avenue . It has been said that whence came Peskin's nickname--the Engineer–which referred to how well he managed all aspects of bridge construction including designing both banks and links without having any prior engineering experience! A plaque dedicated to him hangs upon the bridge crossing now known as Kroeber Drive . By 1920 there were ten businesses employing over 150 people providing goods or services to residents within a fifteen mile radius of Millbrae: four grocery stores (Cheshire’s Drug Store; Smith’s Hardware; Jordon Drugs), two banks (First National Bank - now part of Wells Fargo)one insurance agency (National Union Life Insurance Co.), five auto mechanics shops(Pine Bros., George Fenton & Sons), three druggists (Leeds Pharmacy; Northwestern Drug & Supply Co.; Goldfarb Discount Stores), two professional ice cream parlors(Frosty Hollow Creamery & cones), several bootleggers/dealers in petroleum products(Western Refining Co.), eleven farmhands employed primarily growing hay, vegetables or fruits (six dairy farmers; nine fruit growers; seven vegetable farmers); six teachers employed teaching school children grades Pre-K through 8th grade ();and one carpenter ()). Manufacturing activity increased during World War II with production contracts such as those given by Boeing Aircraft Corporation for propellers and other airplane parts.(see brochure "A History Of Mills And Manufacturers In Southern California") On July 15th 1944 General Electric organized their new subsidiary American Telephone & Telegraph Company Limited into eleven divisions based upon various technological functions such as telephone service provider (), electric power producer (), oil pipeline operator (), wire media producer (). One division assumed responsibility for all phone Line 11 operations: American Telephone Manufacturing Incorporated (). On December 12th 1948 DuPont acquired American Telephone&Telegraph Incorporated(). At this time GEFEI was divided into thirteen divisions - twelve manufacturing divisions and one regulatory division responsible for providing telecommunications services (.NETGEI). On January 1st 1969 these thirteen divisions were merged into National Broadcasting Corporation under the name NBCUniversal Television Services LLC.). WithNBCUniversal Television Services LLC.'s acquisition by Comcast Incorporated., it became clear that Universal Pictures owned NBC Universal TV Services LLC., making it effectively a subsidiary again..

It continued to be operated by the Millbraes until 1925 when it was sold to Bethlehem Steel Company. In 1951, Bethlehem merged with United Metals Corporation, which in turn merged with American Wire & Cable Company in 1969 to form AT&T Bell Communications Incorporated.
