In 1853, Spanish missionaries came to Millbrae and began missionary work among the Kumeyaay people. They founded el convento de San José de los Angeles (the Mission Santa Ana) on Main Street in 1854. In 1911, ranchers from outlying Rancho Bernardo bought 8 acres of land east of Millbrae for $5 per acre from Adolphus Crane Jr., who had purchased it from Manuel Nieto for $25 per acre two years earlier. John Sutter erected his mill on this property in 1915 after finding an abandoned water wheel on his rancho that he could use to produce flour for his bakery customers back east. A post office was established at Millbrae by mail order in 1922; it operated until 1959. On April 20, 1954, voters approved Measure H (popularly called "The Taxation measure") which authorized annexation by Fresno County of part of unincorporated territory lying east of Interstate 5 between Isleton Avenue and Alameda Boulevard (now Hearst Avenue). The mill closed operations around 1960 because it was no longer economically feasible to operate with only local production; however, some aspects such as grain storage remain active today as a Heritage Storage Facility LLC operation managed by Friends Of The Earth California Inc..

Millbrae is a small town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 998 at the 2010 census. Millbrae was founded in 1887 by J.D. Power and Company as a citrus fruit packing and packing plant on the southeast shore of Point Reyes National Seashore. In 1915, it became a small city with its own government. It merged with Sausalito in 1959 to become one municipality. The mill was built on an artificial island created by dredging for sand to be used for making beachgoers' umbrellas during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which destroyed large parts of downtown Santa Cruz and other parts of Marin County. The mill continued to operate until 1958 when it was closed due to economic reasons and replaced by the present day mill complex including a hotel and several thousand housing units In 1915, Millbrae became part of Sausalito because that city had annexed much of what is now Marin County (including Point Reyes). On July 1st, 1959 Sausalito annexed Millbrae as well creating one municipality with a population exceeding 10,000 people As part of their agreement that Millbrae would merge into Sausalito once it reached this size limit (10,000 residents), both cities are obligated to maintain public services together through special taxing districts called " amalgamation districts ". These districts have been very important in keeping both municipalities financially solvent over time; they levy taxes on property located within their boundaries specifically for this purpose
The millbrae area was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The first mill on the site was built in 1798 by John Sutter and named for his wife, Millenia. The mill continued to be used until it was destroyed by fire in 1868. After the mill destruction, a new mill was built on the same site and operated until 1903. In 1908, a flour-mills complex were built next to the original mill, which lasted until 1967. In 1915, a cotton gin was built at Millbrae and became operational that year. In 1928, an oil refinery also opened at Millbrae and continues to operate today. Since its inception as a town, Millbrae has undergone many transformations; it has become home to several shopping malls, restaurants, libraries, and other cultural amenities. It is also known for its annual Strawberry Festival which celebrates agriculture and local strawberries
