In 1860, John Ord's son George bought out his father's interest in the mill and continued business as George & Sons Lumber Company until 1916 when it merged with Pacific Gas & Electric Company's main lumber company, Pacific Lumber Company Ltd., which had been organized in 1892 as a Delaware corporation with a monopoly on logging in Northern California. With this merger came new ownership opportunities for both companies;George became president of PG&E while his brother-in-law Harry Sinclair became CEO of PLECG&E (later Southern Progress Corporation). In 1958, PG&E built its first power plant at Millbrae; this plant has since been replaced by two more plants: one on First Street near PG&E headquarters and one near Milpitas Airport. Mills shuttered during World War II because of war production restrictions; however, they reopened after hostilities ended. Afterward many mills were closed again due to low demand for wood products during peacetime but starting in the early 1970s there was renewed interest in timber production within PG&E due largely to rising gas prices which made logging less profitable than other energy sources such as coal or oil. By 1880 there were over 100 people living in Millbrae with some 5 churches and 7 schools serving the community. The mills continued production until 1967 when they caught on fire which destroyed most of the buildings within minutes. However, despite their loss it didn't stop locals from rebuilding as quickly as possible; this led to a rapid growth of the town which today houses several businesses including Google+, Facebook Messenger*, Microsoft Azure*, Apple* subsidiaries*. Millbrae's rich history comes from its many contributions to society - both during its early days when it was an important local center for commerce and manufacturing as well as after 1967 when it experienced significant reconstruction following a devastatingFire *which left much of the community rebuilds quickly
Millbrae was founded in 1887 by John W. Woolley and his wife, Anna Ladd. The first store on the current site opened in 1890. By 1912, Millbrae had a post office, telephone company, two churches (the First Baptist Church and the Methodist Church), a school (The Millbrae School District #2), and a small grocery store. The city's population reached 1,500 by 1914. In 1922, the Woolleys sold their business to Harry Crouch for $1 million. Crouch renamed the business "Crouch's". In 1948, the city merged with neighboring San Francisco; however, Millbrae retained its own government until 1978 when it became part of San Jose. In 1984, local entrepreneur Ted Larson purchased the property where City Hall now stands and began to redevelop it into an urban center with shopping malls, offices/retail stores, apartments and other housing types as development continued over ensuing years up to present day.
