Millbrae was founded in 1853 by John Larkin and his brother-in-law, Samuel Morse. It is named after Nicholas Millburn, an early settler of that area. One of the most important moments for Millbrae came on July 16th, 1854 when United States President James K. Polk delivered a speech from the nearby Rancho del Arroyo about irrigation projects which would improve growing crops and provide employment for local farmers. This event helped spur development around Millbrae and began to change the character of the town as it became known today. The growth of milling industries led to large numbers of people moving into town during the late 1800s and early 1900s, giving birth to mills like Armour Equipment Co., Wernham Hogg Paper Co., Pajaro Chemical Works #1 (now Empire Paper) and others that have still played an important role in downtown Millbrae today. Although many businesses closed down over time due to competition from larger companies or changes in technology, Downtown Millbrae has seen many new businesses come online since 2000 thanks to its Vital Signs program which helps support local businesses through marketing, advertising and other forms of assistance

The town's name comes from its location on two small hills that overlooked Golden Gate Bay. The first mill opened in 1879 and produced flour for local marketplaces. By 1904, mills had been built around the bay area and Millbrae became one of Northern California's leading fishing villages with more than 100 boats forwarded each day to various fresh water fisheries throughout San Francisco Bay. In 1916, Mills merged with Republic Coffee Company which made it one of the world’s largest coffee companies with assets including breweries, plantations and cafes in over 30 countries. As coffee prices soared during World War II, mills turned their attention to munitions production as war output soared and military contracts Increased In 1970 Republic merged with International Harvester Corporation (IHC) creating what would become one of America’s largest industrial conglomerates. IHC continued to produce munitions until 1986 when it was sold to defense contractor Northrop Grumman
