Millbrae is a small town in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 1,664 at the 2010 census. Millbrae is located on the southern edge of the San Francisco Peninsula and shares borders with Sausalito to the east and Tiburon to the north. The first European settlement in what is now Millbrae was established by Anglo-Californians in 1859 as a result of goldmining activity in nearby Sonoma County. The name of the town originates from an early post office name, Mills Beach (now part of Sausalito). A millrace running through Millbrae village served as a water supply for mills near Sausalito until 1865 when reliable water sources became available closer to Tiburon. For many years, there was no telephone service or electricity within Millbrae village so residents had to rely on kerosene lamps and flashlights for illumination during daylight hours; this changed with the installation of antennas for television transmission within Coherent Communications Corporation's ("Coherent") new facilities in Tiburon in 1975. In 1970, local citizens successfully petitioned county officials to rename their community after American Civil War general Ulysses S. Grant because he had been featured prominently on Marin County's centennial plaque that year. On July 15, 1976, Millbrae officially became Grantville when it merged into Marin County. In 1984, Coherent replaced its local provider - Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company - with Northern Telecom Services Inc., which offered dialup services initially and then DSL later; Valley Bell also owned a small station serving the village before it withdrew from service in 2001. Since 2000,millbraean has been home to several businesses such as real estate company Coldwell Banker Hammonton Properties LLP., Save-A-Lot Supermarket (), Starbucks (), Safeway (), Costco () and Pabst Blue Ribbon (). Additionally there is now an Apple Store () next door to Safeway Open Market (). Recently though plans are being made for a larger shopping center known as "Village Square" which will contain several stores including Home Depot (), Macy's (), Sears () and JCPenney ().

The Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded in 1795 and became famous for itspropaganda against Spanish colonial rule. In 1853, the town of Millbrae was incorporated as part of Riverside County. During World War II, Millbrae played a key role in the development of aircraft production at Southern California's Northrop Aviation plant. After the war,Millbrae experienced rapid growth as a result of new housing developments, business expansions, and an influx of commuters from nearby Los Angeles and Riverside counties. However,millbrae's economic decline began to take hold during the 1990s as a result of declining industrial employment and population growth in other parts of south county. Today, millbrae is known for its wide variety of restaurants and bars, as well as its eclectic architecture which includes Victorian houses dating back to 1858.
