Millbrae is a small town in the East Bay Area of San Francisco, California. Millbrae was founded in 1887 as an agricultural center on the eastern edge of what is now San Francisco. The population was 5,052 at the 2010 census. It is located about 11 miles (17 km) northwest of downtown San Francisco and is bordered by Contra Costa County to the east, Alameda County to the north and west, and Livermore Valley to the south. The first settlers were mechanics who built their first sawmill in 1887 on land that they purchased from James Laughlin. They named their mill "Livermore" after Livermore Valley, which they thought would be a more auspicious name than "San Francisco." In 1896, John Sutter donated 640 acres (250 ha) of his holdings in Millbrae Township to the City of San Francisco for use as a open-air park. The park became known as Golden Gate Park. In 1898, Bigelow & Co., Merchants Bankers Trust Company and other investors bought out Laughlin's original shareholders for $2 million. They formed Bigelow & Co., Ltd., with Wm. Halleck as its first president and Solomon Folsom as its second president. The company developed mills at various locations around Northern California until it closed its last mill in 1951 due to competition from other producers of flouride products exported from North America through World War II. Today Millbrae remains a largely agricultural community with some 3 dozen businesses generating economic activity including 14 farms raising livestock; six fruit orchards; two cheese factories; one plastics manufacture; four poultry operations; one paper mill; three restaurants; two banks (Staples & First National); one post office (1897); one grocery store (1912). A large number of older buildings remain – most notably Pritchett's Pharmacy Building dating back to 1912 which still stands despite numerous attempts by arsonists over the years to damage or remove it – while new housing has been built throughout downtown since 2000 primarily within walking distance of civic centers like City Hall and United Nations Plaza (). Millbrae, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. Millbrae is located on Highway 19 about 25 miles (40 km) east of Bakersfield. The mill started operation in 1878 and continued to produce flour and other goods until it closed in 1922. It was then used as a storage depot for the agricultural products coming into Bakersfield from out of Kern County. In 1984, the mill building was moved to its current location and is now used as part of the Millbrae Historical Museum. The Millbrae post office opened in 1881 and continued serving until 1945. The first postmaster was Mrs. Mabel Dodge Wright. During World War II, it served as an air raid shelter for the town during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor!
The millbrae community was established in the early 1800s when a flour mill and bakery were built on the south bank of Millbrae Creek. The mill operated until 1851, when it was destroyed by fire. The bakery continued to operate until 1907. In 1911, the mill was leased to James Gleason and his family who began operating it as a flourmill and grocery store. The Gleasons sold the business in 1951 to Harry J. Reynolds who ran it as a feed storage and processing plant until 1984 when it closed down due to economic recession.
