Millbrae was founded in 1868 as a small farming community by George Waddell and his family. The millinery industry dominated the community until the early 21st century, when it became an agricultural center with citrus production and cattle ranching predominant. The name "Milbrae" derives from English for "millstream". The stream that flows through Millbrae is named after George Waddell's farmstead on which it was founded. Today, most of the buildings in Millbrae were built between 1920 and 1940; these include a Methodist church (1910), an Agricultural Research Building (1924), a Post Office (1928), and several schools including two elementary schools (1868-1970) and one high school (1963-present). One of the earliest businesses to open in Millbrae was The Globe Piano Store which opened in 1868. In 1870, J P Bickerton started trading groceries at what is now known as Foothill Boulevard and later went into retail business selling notions such as socks, hats, aprons, clothing hosiery etc., opening up what would become one of Northern California's first commercial stores. In 1924, Mr & Mrs H V Moody built their home on present day North Main Street; this was followed by other businesses such as The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company from 1926 to 1952 when they moved to their current location on North Sacramento Street; along with other local business owners who kept the district's economy active until about 1970 when all but one store closed down due to lack of customers or competition from more modern shopping malls across town.
