Millbrae is a small town located in the Sacramento Valley, about an hour and a half east of downtown Sacramento. Millbrae was first settled in 1851 by John Sutter and his family. The present-day community developed as a farming village that sprang up around the millrace on the banks of the American River. The original millrace was built in 1848 by James Waddell to help irrigate land nearpresent-day Millbrae. The millrace became important for several reasons. First, it allowed merchants and farmers to bring water from the river below to wash their crops; second, because it allowed transportation of goods between Millbrae and downtown Sacramento; third, because it provided power for local mills; fourth, because it helped generate traffic on the American River Bridge which connected Millbrae with downtown Sacramento. One of Millbrae's most famous residents was Julius Caesar Hill (1863-1943), who served as Mayor of Sacramento from 1921 until 1923. Hill is also considered one of California's most significant leaders during this time period. He spearheaded efforts to create what is now known as Kings County and played a major role in developing both Rancho San Joaquin and Golden State Park. Mill brae has experienced many different changes over its history including being annexed by nearby Menlo Park in 1906, becoming part of El Sobrantes County in 1959, becoming part of Davis City Limits in 1966, then reverting back to Sacramento City Limits after three decades before finally joining with Millbrae again in 2000. Today, much like its namesake community - characterized by agriculture and industry - Mills brae remains vibrant with active businesses including restaurants and bars along with an impressive array of cultural attractions such as Miller’s Brewery - home to one of the largest brewing operations in North America - as well as numerous historic homes dating back centuries that are open for tours or viewings today!
The Millbrae area of Millbrae, California was settled in 1846 by John C. Frémont and his family. The mill was built on the site of an old sawmill and began operations in 1847. In 1868, the mill burned down and was replaced by a new mill powered by water turbines. The mill continued to operate until it closed in 1978.
