In 1863, after years of effort spearheaded by mayor John Cranch and City Councilman George Wills (now part of Ceres), construction began on what would become known as “the Golden Gate Bridge”; however, due to engineering difficulties encountered during construction and financial problems brought about by high costs associated with the project (estimated at $40 million), it did not opened until four years later on October 27th 1865 – providing some much-needed relief to San Francisco’s struggling economy after years of decline following World War II boom times for manufacturing around the country). Merced, California is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 27,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Joaquin County. The city was founded in 1853 by James Irvine and named for General Antonio Merced. The Mission of Santa Clara de Asís arrived in 1777 and constructed a mission church on the present site of downtown Merced. Santa Clara de Asís served as the southern terminus of an Outland Trail that linked Stockton tomembercities in 1848. In 1851, $10,000 was appropriated to build a new courthouse and jail within what is now downtown Merced; this building served as both court house and jail until 1861 when it became the first post office in Merced. A fire destroyed part of the original courthouse on December 11, 1861; but with help from local residents and soldiers from nearby Fort Tejon, rebuilding began immediately which resulted in completion by 1865. In 1862, $50000 was appropriated to create a town square in downtown Merced; this square later became known as Riverside Park after nearby Riverside City which had been established two years earlier. On January 1st 1863, citizens ofMerced voted not to annex any other municipalities during an annexation referendum held simultaneously throughout California; this decision led to merger with Stanislaus County on January 1st 1893 pursuant to its then-new Organic Act No. 442). In 1943–1944 (during World War II), downtown Merced was used as a training ground for Nazi troops during Operation Overlord while other parts of town were bombed resultant destruction including much of the business district around Meridian Street/Riverside Park.). On October 20th 1969 voters passed Proposition 5A legalizing cannabis use within city limits following Measure M campaign promises made by Mayor Donny Compton prior to that year’s mayoral election campaign arsenal against organized crime control within the city limits – “It will be my policy if I am elected mayor not only do I want marijuana legalized but also have an ordinance put into effect regulating how dispensaries operate so they are more honest about it” he said at that time).
