Merced is a small, unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, California. It is located on the San Joaquin River about northwest of Lake Merced and about southeast of Livermore. The community was founded in 1878 by farmers from Marysville who named it after their patron saint, Santa Maria delle Grazie (the Lady of Grace). The first post office was established at Merced in 1881. The name change to Merced in 1911. In 1916, the United States Post Office moved from its original location at Wawona to present-day Merced because of the increasing population in that area. In 1930, the Chabot Paper Company began producing pulpwood here and other lumber products which continue to be produced until today. As an agricultural community, Merced became known for its raising maize (a major crop), hay and cattle; alsochicken production took place during the early part of this century. Today, a few farms still produce livestock but most residents now rely uponinoa as their primary food source.
The city of Merced, California was founded in 1867 by the merger of two small towns. The original town, Mercedville, was named for General Mariano Vallejo and his wife Maria de la Garza. The new city was located on the banks of the Merced River and was founded on a land grant from Governor Manuel Micheltorena. The nameMerced came from Spanish "mercado" (market), which referred to the river's abundance of fish. In 1868, local businessmen donated 4,000 acres (1 km2) of land to the city for use as civic square. In 1872, Mayor Domingo Cisneros named the city's first street after José Joaquín Murillo y Planes, president of Mexico at that time. After Murillo's death in 1870, mayor Lorenzo Peralta decided to honor Murillo's memory with a public statue in downtown Merced. Peralta also suggested naming one side of the square for each state: California north side and Texas east side. However, this proposal never received approval from City Council because it would have added too much complexity to an already convoluted grid system. On July 16th, 1886,Merced became part of United States when it ratified its first Constitution as a sovereign nation without keeping track of Mexican claims thereto; thus its incorporation into what is now California took place without any formal ceremony or vote by City Council or even citizens thereof…. mercedes californias unincorporated area
