From the beginning, target holders were a common sight in Merced. In 1868, A.J. Brierley patented a design for a target holder that allowed shooters to hold their targets at an adjustable height so they could better see them. The patent was granted and soonTarget Holders became known throughout the area. In 1928, the first Target Holder Association was formed and within five years, there were over 100 members statewide. By 1938, there were more than 200 member organizations across California. During World War II, many people in Merced made donations to the military to help with their needs; Target Holders continued this tradition during the war years by donating surplus munitions to local arsenals. Over time, Target Holder Associations have evolved into national organizations that support shooting competitions and teach safety procedures for all types of targets including artillery projectiles and rifles. Today, Target Holder Associations continue to provide important resources for Merced shooters of all ages and levels of experience.

In 1853, the Spanish settlement of Merced was founded by Manuel Nieto and his wife María de la Luz on the east side of the San Joaquin River. Mexican Californios soon arrived, settling in what is now Merced County and surrounding areas. In 1854, the United States acquired California from Mexico through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and organized it as a new country. The U.S. government named Merced County after General John Cushing who had fought in Mexico's War for Independence against Spain. The original town site was on land grants given to early settlers by Governor James Mott and Mayor George Burnett. A post office was established at MERCED (now part of Sacramento) in 1855, and remained in operation until 1906. The first store built inMERCED was Wm Merrill & Sons with a store front on Proctor Avenue between First Street and Second Street . This device was designed to be used with rifles using smoothbore ammunition. It consisted of a cylindrical frame with a round hole cut through it at one end. The round hole was located near the muzzle of the rifle andrahad an adjustable rest on top which allowed shooters to adjust how tight or loose the target holder fit around theirtarget. Another early Target Holder design was created by Harry Kendall in 1923. This device consisted of a metal frame with four ribs that ran along its length. A piece of cloth or paper was attached to each rib and stuck out behind theframe. The biggest benefit of using a mechanicaltarget holder is that they're relatively easy to use - just adjust your aiming position, put on your shooting clothes, and you're ready to go! They're also perfect for practice because you don't have to worry about getting everything perfectly lined up each time - just hold onto thearm until you've got your shot aimed correctly, then let go! One downside is that those with weaker hands may find it difficult to hold onto either arm while still keeping their sights correct; however, those with more strength might not have any trouble holding onto either arm while firing. Overall, these targets tend to be fairly durable but can be quite challenging to use iffy for beginners. Merced was founded by Emigrant soldiers in 1847, and became a Mexican town after the California Gold Rush. The first post office opened in 1852, and the first store was built in 1854. The name of the town was changed to Merced in 1865, when it became part of Modesto County. In 1912, Merced applied for cityhood, but did not receive a vote. In 1959, Merced became an incorporated city. The population ofMerced increased from just over 3000 residents in 1960 to over 9600 residents by 2000. In 2013, the City Council voted to annex adjacent Unincorporated areas of Stanislaus County intoMerced as part of a larger goal to annexation all unincorporated areas within Stanislaus County. The annexation is set for completion in early 2016. This will bring the population ofMerced up to 30,000 residents and make it one of the most populous cities in Northern California
Merced, California was founded in 1853 by Jedediah Smith and his wife Mary. The city is named for General Mariano Vallejo, who donated land to the town. The first post office in Merced opened in 1854.
