The Merced Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892. The club became a rifle and pistol society in 1915. The first rifle season was held in 1916. The club has been holding annual rifle tournaments since 1922. Today, the club offers memberships for shooting events and programs that are open to the public. It is located on the east bank of the San Joaquin River, about south of Fresno and north of Stockton. In 1846, Merced became part of Mexico when it was annexed by that country. The U.S. gained control over the area in 1848 following Mexican War hostilities. A post office called Merced was established in 1851, and remained open until 1861. In 1912, a group of mercedhers purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of section 21 from the Kern county government for $5 per acre (1/2 pound). They named their tract "Lake Merced". The community grew quickly with dozens of homes built during 1912-1915; by 1918 there were 124 residents within a radius of 10 miles (16 km). By 1920 there were more than 350 people living in what is nowMerced Village (). The 1926 merger of several small towns in eastern Fresno County led to the creation of Merced as an incorporated municipality with a population size greater than 100 people – larger even than that then enjoyed by most American towns of similar size such as Delano or Hanford (). On December 4, 1951 voters approved Measure T which created a new city services district including all unincorporated areas withinMerced limits and changed its name to City Services District No. 3 ()–the first time such districts had been set up in California (). It should be noted that this measure did not create any new municipal boundaries; rather it amended those existing withinCity Services District No: 2(). On September 15, 1957 City Services District No.: 3 merged into City Services District No.: 2 effective November 1st (). Consequently every resident withinMERCED village except for those residing outside CITY SERVICES DISTRICT NO.: 2 has since been automatically included within CITY SERVICES DISTRICT NO: 3(). This change made MERCED one single city with an overall population approaching 500 persons! In 2002 efforts began to annex portions surrounding MERCEDvillage so that these areas could serve as their own independent municipalities but no annexation has yet taken place due to opposition from some residents who feel they have already been served adequately by CITY SERVICES DISTRICT NO: 3
After the California Gold Rush of 1848, Merced became one of the most important towns in California. It was a small town at the time, with only a few hundred residents. However, it quickly grew into an important commercial and cultural center for the region. Merced was originally founded by Mexican Americans who had come to California in 1847 as part of the Gold Rush. The first permanent settler in Merced was José de la Cruz y Pacheco, who built a cabin on what is now State Route 49 near today's downtown. By 1850, there were about 25 Mexicans living in Merced. A post office was opened in Merced on November 7, 1850, under the name of "Palo Alto". The older buildings from before 1850 have been used as housing or are still standing today such as: The San Francisco Hotel which is located near Main Street and Broadway; Juan Bautista del Castillo Adobe which is also located nearby on Main Street; and La Casa Blanca (now called DowntownMercedes) which was built around 1860 CE on what is now Hillcrest Avenue between First and Second Streets.
