Merced is a city in Fresno County, California, United States. The population was 11,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fresno County. The city is located on the Kern River and within sight of Yosemite National Park. The first people to live in what is now Merced were the Ohlone people who occupied what are now Olvera and San Joaquin counties from approximately 1810 to 1833. A Spanish mission was founded in 1769 in present-day Merced by Father Pedro Funes y Arellano and named after Saint John the Baptist. In 1836, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered Mission Presidio de San Fernando (present-day Los Angeles) erected over an area where the town of Ahumada now stands, as part of his campaign against American forces under General Perfecto Cámpora during this war for control over Mexico City. In 1846, when California became a state, Merced was incorporated as a town with a population of 22 residents under the leadership of Mayor George Tilton. It then became one of Californias nine towns to be admitted into the Union on November 15, 1850. At its incorporation it had a land value of $1 per acre ($24 per km²). In 1860 it had a population of 1,000; by 1880 it had grown to 875 and by 1990 its population was 10,858 when it lost its status as an agrarian community to nearby Fresno due to urban growth there. Accordingly much development occurred outside town boundaries: early mills were built around what are now downtown streets such as Broadway and Doniphan avenues; brickyards proliferated along Doniphan Avenue; streetcar lines ran through downtown; agricultural production increased with irrigation systems developed for cotton and other crops; water works were begun providing potable water for industry until 1923 when they transitioned into providing electric power starting in 1926 In 1933–1934 work began on forming Ahumada Reservoir which would provide water for Irwindale Municipal Utility District property southeast of town center As part of Regional Planner David Raymond's efforts to culminate progress made since World War II throughout all local government areas within 25 miles (40 km) thereof "Merced Extension" designation was given in 1951 expanding municipal services offered thereby creating more than 9 acres (3 hectares) new annexed territory including much undeveloped open space northeastward extending beyond today's limits eastward past Interstate 5 near Yuba City

The population was 79,567 at the 2010 census and is the second-largest city in Northern California after San Francisco. The City of Merced was incorporated on February 22, 1868, and annexed by Fresno on November 15, 1892. The original name for Merced was Buena Vista because General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's army fought its way through that town on its way to battle against Mexican forces near Sacramento on October 25,1846. The area now known as Merced had been under Mexican control since 1821 when it was part of Alta California under Pueblo Chief José Maria Taraval. On January 26, 1850s Mexican President Porfirio Díaz ordered military commander Agustín Gutierrez y Costilla to expel all American settlers from what is now Yosemite National Park. On July 9, 1851 Californios led by Captain Manuel Nieto (alias Don Manuel) quenched resistance to Gutierrez's orders and took possession of portions of Alta California including present-day Merced County; Alcala del Cuchillo would become their capital later that year. In 1863 Acting Lieutenant Colonel George Crocker established a basecamp at Big Station Creek inside today's City limits just east of Isleta Creek which became Crocker's main water supply until it was replaced by surface water from Mono Lake in 1911; during World War II an airfield and munitions plant were also located here adjacent to today's Mission Viejo Boulevard which served as a vital link between Los Angeles and Bay Area naval vessels operating out of San Francisco Bay Bridgehead
