Merced, California is a small city in the southern corner of Fresno County, California. It is located on the banks of the Kern River and was founded by prospectors in 1859. The city has a population of about 24,000 as of 2017. The first permanent settler in what is now Merced was George Pemberton, who arrived in 1859. In 1861, Pemberton and his son John C. Pemberton founded the town of West Merced on the west bank of the Kern River north of today's downtown Merced. This site became known as Pemberton Landing because it lay at an important trade crossing point for travelers between San Francisco and points east. In 1867-68, Charles Wiltse built a sawmill on Elk Grove Creek south of present-day Downtown Merced. This mill continued to be used until 1958 when it shut down due to poor conditions and lack of maintenance by operators over time. In 1895, following passage through Sacramento Bayou by vessels transporting watermelons from Tulare County via El Centro to Stockton, settlers began arriving in what is now Yosemite National Park frommerced area looking for land that would provide watermelon crops during summertime irrigation purposes only two miles (3 kilometers) wide at most along both banks of Kern River; there were no other resources available aside from flats or hillsides overlooking river mouth where early farmers plowed their fields year-round (the author personal recollection). A few years later they patented title to this land which extended upstream from current day's downtown MERCED limits upriver one block before terminating at river’s edge near present day Road 108A above modern day Hwy 395 entrance into Yosemite National Park – making these early settlers quite rich men! As development increased along riverside areas near Modesto/Mercedesville Roads including Builders Row extending back some 10 blocks inland towards present day Water Valley before terminating at busy City Limits Highway 12 across Mohawk Street Bridge just beyond I-580 Freeway exit - often times followed with creekside lots filling up with homesites rapidly resulting in original founders becoming “Rich Uncle Sams” quickly establishing themselves here permanently throughout entire 1920s decade! Many more people moved here after World War II during period when commute into larger cities became increasingly easier everyday thanks to Interstate 5 freeway construction right through downtown corridor - giving citizens access not just to larger city services but also many Historically Black Colleges and Universities within easy reach like UCLA & UC Berkeley easily accessed via almost every major arterial roadway - finally ending African Americanics isolation within this historically white dominated city proper beginning to change dramatically once again following devastating 9/11 terrorist attack which rocked entire region immediately following initial wave suburban housing prices skyrocketing initially reaching all time highs just prior & subsequent collapses following difficult economic downturn causing even greater loss & impoverishment for millions residing herein - primarily low income black families involuntarily caught between seemingly never ending cycleavoided contact with outside world while struggling daily against seemingly insurmountable odds [See: "What happened next?"].] Water Valley soon became known as "The Place Where Farmers Fished" because so much fish was taken there that boats could hold several hundred pounds (30 kilograms) each without sinking below the surface. The earliest local newspaper published in Water Valley was called The Californian which started publication on November 1st 1865 (). On November 12, 1871, Merced County was founded by Captain George S. Folsom and five other men from Los Angeles. The first post office in the county was established at Mather on February 14, 1872. By 1875, the population of Merced had grown to over 1,000 people and it soon became a major agricultural center with dairy and hay production seeing great growth. In 1888, the California State Legislature created Ventura County out of parts of Merced and San Joaquin counties. On December 15 of that year, Merced also became part of the new state as well. In 1916, voters passed a measure annexing Modoc County to make it an independent county. The Great Depression put a stop to much of the farming activity inMerced County but saw some resurgence starting in the late 1940s due to advancements in irrigation technology and increased demand for milk products around the world. The county has seen steady economic growth since then with a number of new businesses opening up throughout its history including banks, restaurants, health care services and more.
